Hey, Fishies! We’re launching our first Interview/Q+A series "Portfolio Rewind: Would You Hire You?"
Like a portfolio review in reverse, creative leaders will share work they created when they first started out and critique it as if were a book that had just landed in their inbox. Then, tell us if they’d hire their younger selves knowing, and expecting, what they do now.
Drop in for get the chance to ask questions, and get your book reviewed by our guest. Hope you can make it!

Before starting:
1. Have paper, pen/pencil, drink, good set up for the VC. No calculators / spreadsheets for McK.
2. Agree on technology back-up plan if the VC fails (both exit and log back in? Interviewer call you at ##?)
Stuff that’s the same:
1. The silence while you think and write before speaking feels awkward whether in person or virtual, so ignore that.
2. The evaluation criteria - we look for same things in person or in VC
3. I don’t care what you draw or how good your handwriting is. I care how well you can articulate things clearly and in a structured way and about the substance of your answer. I’ve had great in person interviews where the candidate barely wrote anything. So if your interview is McK (especially if its with me), don’t worry so much on this either.
4. I don’t want you to show how great you are at memorizing frameworks. Drawing attention to the implied intention to do this of your post (sorry if misread). I want to see your creativity in structuring a problem. Please don’t recite something you memorized from a book / website of frameworks.
Stuff that’s different:
1. You can have technology problems (see above for tip)
2. You may be tempted to use calculator/Excel for the math, but please don’t (for McK, not sure on other companies).
3. You might need to be more descriptive of the structure (especially if you want to convey what you’ve written). If you start with something like “I’m going to break this question into four topics, first is A, second is B...under A, I’d like to know X, Y, and Z.” then I can follow along very easily and will re-draw it on my notes.
4. You need to think carefully about your environment - make sure it’s quiet, neutral background if possible, have snacks ready, camera at good angle. This also means you have the comfort of being somewhere familiar (vs distracted by new environment or not sure where to find bathroom)
5. Pants are optional
6. You may be tempted by texts, desire to google something, new emails popping up. Exit everything on your computer. Turn off notifications. Silence your phone or put it away (unless VC crashes). You have to stay focused.
Afterwards:
1. If you’re not successful, you’ll be tempted to blame the technology. That’s rarely it (unless I caught you using a calculator!). Be honest with yourself and learn from the feedback.
Hope this helps with your interview
Thank you this is awesome!
