All train! Takes about the same amount of time as driving plus the views are beautiful! To get from Lucca to Venice you may have to backtrack to Florence, but in my opinion it’s a lot easier than driving
I rented a car and did all the driving and it was wicked fun, especially if you love to drive stick. Otherwise, take the train. Time to Florence and Florence to Venice and Venice to Milan should be easy. The only tricky bit is Lucca, since it’s not a big city. I went to Lucca. Cool spot, spent lunch there and left. If you rent a car in Florence, you can drive to Lucca, and I suggest going to Forte dei Marmi on the coast and checking that out. The drive from Florence to Lucca is a nice / fun drive
We drove from Florence to lucca. Spent the night there and had a blast. Fun and easy drive—just annoying because of speeding cameras on the highway! We also drove from Naples to ravello on the amalfi coast. Windy drive but gorgeous.
I've taken the train from Napels to Rome and from Rome, the train to Florence. I assume you'll need to drive to Lucca. Venice to Milan I assume can be accomplished via train
I used www.rome2rio.com to look at train schedules between multiple cities when I was in Italy
