Anybody leave big law for a couple of years to raise your kids and successfully rejoined the legal field? Is big law ever an option again?

I left my big firm 30 years ago when pregnant with my second child. The nanny turnover was killin me emotionally. Months after baby was born hubby (also a lawyer, different firm) took off with a secretary and left the state. I was sick with panic. No job, two babies. Thank goodness I was able to score a Supreme Court clerkship .. a great way to transition back into legal work (and I was a little rusty after being home with kids ~9 months!). After that I joined a midsize firm that thankfully was understanding of my needs as a single parent. As kids became more independent I was able to ramp up more. Have been there for 28 years and have loved it. Single parenting and working full time to support a family is not easy. The key is finding an employer that is supportive. (Ps my kids grew up to be a lawyer and a doctor). My advice: Do what you feel you need to do for your family at the time.

My mom clerked for a district court judge for two years right out of law school, had me and my sister, and didn’t work again until I was in kindergarten (part time). When I was in 7th grade, she opened her own firm with another woman. It was definitely a hard transition to full time and starting her own office but I think working part time helped her. One of my mentors (a family law attorney) told me that you should never stop working, no matter what field you are in, and to always work part time, mostly because it’s hard to jump back in and also to have your own $$$!!

I’d also like the answer to this. I’m a 3rd year, and I don’t think my kids would know who I am if it wasn’t for the pandemic, sad to say.

My two cents. And literally two cents. Do you want to rejoin biglaw? Even after kids? Because I imagine you’ll still have billables and be home after dinner at least some of the days. Essentially, is big law something you would want with a family? Not saying you can’t do it. I’m sure you can. But I think the more important question is: do you want to?

I mean, most partners I’ve met have children, but they’re mostly men. A lot of my fellow female associates want careers in biglaw and to have happy family lives like their male counterparts. I’m not attacking you personally or assuming that you’re saying that’s impossible, but I think there’s a lot that goes unsaid on an industry wide basis when it comes to female attorneys on demanding career tracks.

I live in a HCOL city and am still not being paid enough to save/live . I have all of the tools/ skill sets to leave consulting and go into big tech . Before going out to market myself and get a new job should I even ask D for a raise ? I’m frustrated because I’m adding a lot of value to my current engagements and I think I’d have a good business case for a raise. On a side note I see people leaving left and right here which is not a good sign!

I’m being promoted to Manager this November but recent got offer from a fintech. In money term the manager base pay is 5k greater than the new role but i’m negotiating to match the offer with my Manager salary. Should I wait until promoted or move asap? I dont want to continue working in external audit so trying to pivot to data analyst role/IA in the fintech before moving to full DA/DS position… but thinking the Manager promotion would help negotiate salary in the future.

Where do y’all see the future of M7 going? In the next 20-30 years. Will there still be an M7 or will MBAs be obsolete as more and more elite companies do direct promotion? Will HSW still exist or will the value prop of a brand name be diminished a ton with the continuous rise of tech/AI, etc?

A colleague shared with me the presentation they have prepared for their promotion case. I worked with them on multiple projects during the year and I can clearly see that some of the claims on the deck are wild exaggeration or lies. For example, managed changes in scope for Project X including contract changes. Plot twist: there never was a change of scope for Project X and the contract is exactly the same. How can people be so dishonest? How far can you go before truth catching up?
