I hear the pay sucks for adjunct professors

I teach one course one night a week at a community college. Make about $1100-$1200/month after taxes. I taught FT before I worked at EY and mainly do it now because I missed it. It is hectic on top of my EY job, but I love working with the students. I'm at a high step of the pay schedule because of my previous years of experience, so someone new would make less. I was teaching in person, but this semester we are online via the academic version of Zoom. Should be back to in person Fall 2021.

You need at least a Master's to teach most community college disciplines and a PhD for most university courses.

I’ve taught undergrad and MBA courses at the University I graduated from. I only have a Master’s degree which is all that’s required for adjunct or lecturer positions. It was as simple as telling my accounting professor, who was the director of the accounting department that I wanted to teach. A year after I graduated he emailed me. I did it for about 4 years. Paid $5k per class. Some were 2 week intersessions, a couple 2 day a week semester classes and a 8 week one day a week course. I loved it but it was exhausting to manage going from busy season to intersession to busy season. I skipped the last year but was thinking about reaching out again. I don’t love accounting and find it to really hamper my creative side, but teaching it brought life into it.

Perhaps for accounting and some business courses only an MA is required, but for almost all other disciplines you need a PhD to teach at a 4-year university. I teach political science.

I taught one day a week for a semester course many years ago. It is a lot of work on top of your day job, but personally rewarding. I probably spent 8 - 12 hours/week preparing and 3.5 hours teaching each week, plus several hours grading exams. I got paid $4K for the semester back then. Good luck!

I was scheduled for an in person that turned into an online course. What would you like to know?

No problem! Good luck!

Given that it's more than $5k, it can stay there indefinitely, right? I'm fine with the investment options with my old 401k. And I can transfer it over to a new IRA or new 401k anytime, even years in the future, right? Given that no distribution will come to force the 60 day rule?
