Listen, some of us who aren’t quite high up enough to be included on that Lady Boss list *yet* still believe in the sisterhood and WANT to mentor more young female creatives. Really. Don’t lose faith.

Well... can’t speak for the rest of the people you’re contacting (and I get it. I’ve been ghosted, too). But I’m happy to follow up with coffee and a chat for anyone interested. EricaBoynton@gmail.com

I personally don’t reach out based on ‘sisterhood’ but rather interest in what they’re doing/place/work/fit. I noticed though that men seem to show more openness. Respond, give feedback or advice, or just chat and get to know you and your work.

I’ve actually found men in those positions to be more responsive, open, and reachable/available. Just my experience. Maybe just a coincidence.

I am not feeling this "sisterhood" in the ad biz. That lady boss Excel sheet that's circulating, have any of you gotten gigs through contacting those on that list? How about at least replies?

like

Not feeling the sisterhood either. And sometimes it feels like outright compeition sadly.

Thank you for bringing this up, I’ve felt the same way lately. I’ve been trying to reach out to more women to connect with in the capability I’d like to pursue and have mostly gotten nowhere. It’s been really disheartening. I won’t stop trying, but it sucks that my expectation is just not hearing back at all.

like

I see what you mean. And that’s the current conversation anyways. Why bother getting on it if you don’t follow up with actions.

like

ACD1 - that’s fair, though personally I have been reaching out to both men and women whose work I really enjoy and/or seem to have a personality I’d gel with. It’s just kind of a bummer that men have been noticeably more responsive.

Props, Erica! Agree on trying to foster sisterhood even at lower levels. Even as a senior ad, i want to do everything possible to help junior women at our agency feel empowered and listened to, even if just to be a sound board. I never had that opportunity early in my career and sometimes felt a little alienated.

like

@ACD1 of course (about not writing JUST because she's a lady ECD). Guess I just meant, I expected more common courtesy (a response) from someone who has had to be the only chick at the table at some point. Like being from the same hometown in a way.

OP, I hear what you're saying. Perhaps a slight shift in perspective will help. Pinning professional development/hopes/dreams on gender alone is probably unrealistic and likely unfair to those you're trying to contact. To clarify, the women on that specific list were submitted by others as a form of celebrating them as great to work with if you get a chance. They didn't volunteer, so to speak, to handle cold-calling style requests when I'm certain they're very, very busy at the end of the day. I think it's great you're utilizing it in the way that you are as another of many things you could do to network, but my advice is to treat it the same as open rates for direct mail are (i.e. 1% response would a massive success:)). And as Erica mentioned, look around and don't be afraid to reach out to those who already know you or are sitting across the isle, even if not at ECD level. Feel free to contact me as well if you'd like. Hugs and best of luck. What you're doing is courageous and if you keep knocking, a door WILL open.

Was at an event recently. Seems like advertising really only cares about diversity as it applies to white women. I think this industry wants to stay white.

Yes! The stretching of "diversity” seems to be such a widespread symptom of this industry’s fear of addressing the uncomfortable realities of race within it. A distraction? Very “All Lives Matter” ...

I have a bit of a dilemma and need some advice. My manager pushes really hard to recruit and hire only minority candidates. While I'm all for diversity, it feels unethical to exclude other qualified candidates just because they are a particular race and gender (white males). I've had to pass over a few candidates that were WAY more qualified and in my opinion would have made a much better fit. I don't know if there's anything I can or should do.

In the early stages of interviewing at a large company for an in-house role. They volunteered some basic comp information at the first interview to be transparent. A large portion of the comp (40%) comes in the form of RSUs. If we progress further, what questions should I be asking about the RSUs? The vesting schedule is key. Thoughts on pros / cons of this form of comp? My biggest concern is that the base salary is too low for me to comfortably live on…but the “total compensation” is great!
