I’m in the same boat except I’m 3 years in public accounting tax. Lately have been considering a career change, because tax can’t really lead to much else... I’m 25 so have time, but man is the thought intimidating
Have you considered FDD?
My biggest advice to anyone looking to move out of tax is:
1. Have your CPA license. This isnt happening without it sorry but it's the truth.
2. Don't talk to recruiters. They don't care and don't want to help you.
3. Know exactly what you want to do. You need to know exactly what you want and it has to be within reason. Don't tell some people u wana do valuations and others u wana do something else. Also your not going from tax to IB at Goldman so don't have over the top goals like that.
4. Try to switch into the role directly at your current firm if it has it and network with people in that group.
5. If that doesnt work find a "lower level" firm and message people in that group who are from your college or current firm and talk with them.
Nope.
I’m an m2 and have been talking to trusted partners about a career change. I was worried I’d be “wasting” my tax degree if I leave tax. They reminded me I’m 6 years into a 40 year career ... definitely not too late to switch. Might be one step back, two steps forward, but worth it for quality of life and happiness.
Tax degree isn’t that valuable anyway. We are only getting it since better ones weren’t achievable at that moment. Would dedicate my whole life learning and climbing
Not on topic but M1 making 130k? Are you in specialty tax in a HCOL city?
Yes transitioning this January. Going back to school for MIS and data analytics. I haven’t invested that much time as you in tax. I’m an S1 and realized I’m not a fit for this field and imagine a miserable future in tax. Like you I started as a tax intern and just stuck with it.

Following because I’m curious.
Same
I’m an M1 in a specialty group and will be putting in my notice jan 4th to go into real estate full time. So long!
What market?
I left as a senior for the IRS and couldn’t be happier. I enjoyed tax as a subject matter but couldn’t stand all the headaches of being in PA.
What region/market are you in?
I left and had to take a slight pay cut and go down a level. But it was worth it.
Pm me if you want. I can give you my insights
I’m an experienced tax associate and I want to know too!
Following. Just saw this. JD hire, deal consulting in highly specialized tax area. About a year in, and I can’t stand it. I find it painstakingly boring, not the least bit motivating. So I definitely can’t see myself doing this long-term. I’m early enough in to have an exit opp back into traditional legal roles in litigation or transactions, but don’t have the experience. Took this job because it’s what was available and I wanted to give transactions a shot. But now, regrets 😅
PWC 5: It certainly is. I’ve got friends in that field, but it’s highly technical and often times reputable law firms only hire JDs with an engineering background, which I don’t have. If I can get out soon enough, I’d jump to litigation. My concern is the exit op from going Big4 lawyer route having no litigation experience since entering the workforce. Hoping I’m not stuck in an area I hate
Currently M1 and also want to know! I am looking at Coding, but I am also worried the field is getting saturated at entry level.
Interested. I am a SM tax and not sure whether want to do this for life :(
Do you like it better than PA ? Do you truly have work life balance ?
Same here. I’m foreign on H1-b so it’s not like I had an option though. Soon to become a permanent resident and contemplating whether it makes sense to jump ship at this point...
Following because I’m in the same shoes
Following because same. My first thought is switch to industry because you at least there you can have side gigs before quitting.
I’ve been thinking about doing an MBA. I heard admissions really like PA background, but am not sure what ops I would have.
