Anyone ask for mental health leave before? Feel really stupid to ask as a junior only six months in but the stress is getting really overwhelming and it is really starting to affect my performance at work. Feels like something really bad is going to happen if I don't get a handle on it soon.

Hey there, sorry to hear about what you are going through. In the immediate sense, download BetterHelp and connect with a therapist. I think you should definitely take a leave and ignore what anyone says.

Never feel bad about wanting to put your mental health first. The rat race should not come before your sanity and happiness.
If you need a break, take it.

About six months into my first year, I reached out to my local bars layered assistance program. When you can, please do so. I know it can be tough but please do. You’re not alone even though I know it feels like it sometimes. Rooting for you.

like

It’s happening all over the place, you are not alone. I know multiple people who are in their first year who’ve taken mental health leave in the last year or two. Take care of yourself, what you’re experiencing is legitimate and you deserve care.

like

Take it! You usually can only get take paid mental leave if you have a psychiatrist note though

I haven’t done it myself but know several people who have. I’d speak with HR and/or benefits on a confidential basis for the procedures at your firm. Check the sick leave policy to see who handles.

I think my partner is making my eating disorder worse. It seems like he is very conscious of weight or at least looks, and I feel like he often tries to deter me from eating (like if I mention a late lunch he'll reply that we're having dinner soon so to hold off). I'm not sure if he is even aware of it, but he knows about my issues so it makes me wonder. My ED also runs rampant so it could be all in my head. Does anyone have experience dealing with this? I want to say something but not sure how.

My firm flaunts about being involved in the community and giving back. Offices across the country do a day of service where attys and staff do community service. There is a fee/cost for the volunteer activities and the attys are responsible for paying for it.

Now I strongly believe in donating for different causes but this seems strange that a big firm that flaunts about giving back can’t even pay for the meager volunteer cost for each office. Is this normal at other firms?

My hours haven’t been all that great but I just started 6 months ago. First quarter is allegedly slow based on what I heard from partners. Idk if other associates in my group were asked. I said yes since I need to make my hours this year, but I wonder if this is a bad sign? Also, I’m not in litigation.

Do you reply to client emails saying thank you? If so, what do you say?

“You’re welcome” sounds too formal.

“No problem” sounds too informal.

“Anytime” sounds like an invitation to get requests all weekend and all night.

“My pleasure” is clearly a lie when it comes to most legal work.
