Thank you so much for the incredibly thoughtful responses! Really helpful. I think we need to do a bit more research but this gives us a lot to think about!
Should add... we have some family history of adolescent cancer. Thats the primary reason we’re considering it
I did some research on this for my own kid and ultimately decided to donate instead of bank. My understanding is the most common diseases that could be treated with cord blood actually can’t use your own cord blood because whatever defect caused the disease is in the stem cells. There are some exceptions but they’re rare. Also I believe the wait lists for cord blood are pretty short. That said, this is a really personal decision so I would suggest doing your research and if the peace of mind is worth it to you, by all means
We debated long and hard about this. We are a family of clinicians including myself. And I have 2 close cousins who did do the private banking.
We decided NOT to do the private banking for the same reason M1 states- can’t use your own cord blood for most of the conditions. There’s a list of diseases available online if you google it. Since there’s a family history for you OP, I suggest looking at that list to help you. I think there were one or two childhood leukemias that you can use cord blood for.
The other reasons we decided not to go with a private company is because of privacy issues. If one of these private cord banks goes bust, what happens? Who tracks and how do we know we’re really getting our own blood?
We thought the more logical thing to do was to do public cord banking so that other children can benefit. Unfortunately for us though, our hospital didn’t not have any affiliations with public banks- so we were not able to do that.
It’s a tough decision with too many ‘what ifs’....good luck to you, OP. In the end, whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.
We donated. My physician said that since more people are donating, they ability to find matches has greatly increased
My brother in law has a start up that banks adult stem cells, so won’t let me not bank the baby’s. Their start up (and funders) believe we will eventually be able to use stem cells for a lot more than we currently can, so putting my faith in them for now.
