I went mid-late March.
I highly suggest you hire a driver. The weather is insane and unpredictable. My coworker went same time as me and her car door flew off. Apparently that’s a thing that happens a lot.
Dress for all types of weather. One minute it’ll be sunny and cold, the next you’ll be stuck in a blizzard. (That happened to us and thankfully our driver knew what to do to dig our car out)
Your chances of seeing the northern lights are slim because of the weather in March.
That all being said, it’s amazing and there’s tons of outdoor stuff to do: hike a glacier, ride snow mobiles, go into ice caves. Go to blue Lagoon and other hot springs. Just be super prepared!!!
Well described above, except that it is drivable yourself if you are familiar with winter driving and use common sense in poor conditions, which may mean pulling over. My experience was that extremely crazy weather wouldn’t last all that long.
How long do you need for Iceland? I am tossing around ideas for a vacation for an extended Presidents Day weekend.
I went for 4 days a couple years ago during Presidents’ Day weekend due to limited time off, it was enough for Reykjavik and the golden circle. It was still frozen over. We met a couple who tried to drive to Vik got stuck and had to fly back to Reykjavik. Obviously, ideal to stay longer than an extended weekend, but still worth it if you only have 4 days and you’re getting in on a redeye.
Just know Golden circle isn’t interesting. It’s the least pretty part of Iceland and only is a thing because it’s a day trip from the capital.
To explore Iceland you really have to be willing to drive far from Reykjavik and will often be the only human for miles
I did Iceland as a solo college female traveler for spring break (2nd week of March maybe?) Minimal budget, so no way to do any of the tours or hire a guide…. Parents did it after me in December and had a mix of driving themselves and getting a guide to do things like the northern lights.
It is definitely easy enough to drive yourself, so long as you’ve seen snow before. Most of the things to do are outdoorsy. Just takes some planning to make sure you’re staying in the right town that night since not everything is a close drive to the capital.
