I was in the same boat. We were looking around to buy a house, but stopped the efforts after hearing multitude of new immigration regulations. You can always buy and sell a house. The issue is with the closing costs and realtor fees that you need to shell out during the process. If you get to stay in the house for at least 5+ years, may be the cost evens out. But, if you have to sell it within the next year or so, then you would be losing a lot of money in the process.

On the same boat....every time visa goes for extension, they can screw you 😞

I recently bought one. It’s worth it.

Closing next week.

You want to Buy it in a place it gets sold faster even though you pay premium for a house. I bought it and sold it due to h1 denial.

Depends on where you buy it. For example, in my case, buying in San Francisco seems like it isn’t worth it. We bid about 20% to 35% over asking and if visa issues kick us out of the country, we will have to sell at a significant loss as closing fees traditionally take 5+ years to be recovered. You can of course choose to keep the house and rent it out, but the rental rules here aren’t friendly. Hence, I decided against taking the risk. Not that the stock market has done any better this week...

Also get a townhome as its easier to rent/sell if required to.

Visa is one thing but prices everywhere are super high right now. No guarantees but history shows they will correct soon - that might be a good time to buy.

You get quality life— much better than apartments and tax benefit too. If you have kids, things will be even better

Agree with most folks here. I have kids and want them to enjoy quality time in a house. And since they are US citizens, this can end up being their property for the future (even if I end up leaving)

Go for it . If you have to leave, you can always sell it, sometimes w/o being physically in the US

There's something about living in your own house that $ cannot replace. Yes, there are chances you may lose some money, and unless those are catastrophic for your budgeting I'd say why not.

Wife and I are on H1B making combined income of about $370k, with $300k in cash savings. Green card will likely take decades so not really something to depend on. Given all the uncertainty that comes with living in US on visa, where do you invest?
