Anyone cares to share light on Merck as a company? Looks like it has been going through a lot of acquisitions in recent years. Healthy company both culturally and financially to work for?

Almost all big pharma make frequent acquisitions. Big pharma core competencies are running clinical trials efficiently and commercializing products globally, which are both really about navigating regulatory complexity not research/scientific innovation. Bets on the research are very uncertain so most of the true innovation is funded by VC in smaller biotechs and they cash out through acquisition once they've reached proof of concept. The bigger rdf flag for Merck is how dependant they are on pembro. Pembro is 1/3 of Merck's total revenues. It is likely to lose exclusivity in about 5 years and face biosimiliar competition. That is going to create a massive revenue hole and likely lead to big layoffs unless they can find a next generation of products that sell >1bn per month. Hence, all the M&A now.

Very insightful. Thank you!!

Are you talking American Merck (pharma) or German Merck (owns Millipore/Sigma Aldrich etc)? Not that I have answers to your qs but would help to clarify for others!

American

I’ve been working at or with Merck in various capacities for 15 years now. Merck’s core competency is R&D and drug and vaccine development. As far as an operating company and it’s utilization of technology, I’ve generally found Merck to lack discipline. Merck isn’t unique in looking for a silver bullet or easy out of the box solution to problems, but I’ve found that they tend to equate activity with progress.

I have worked at Merck (ex-US) and the culture is great. People are generally professional and take pride in their job/work product. Can't speak for IT as Amazon1 mentioned earlier but the IT people I used to bump into tended to be generally happy

Hi Tax Bowlers, I'm an experienced associate (2yrs) in a Big 4 Transfer Pricing division. I have reached a point in my career where I am considering taking up a professional certification. Several colleagues recommended taking up either ACCA or CFA, however, I see little connection between these certifications and the work that I am currently doing, and what I plan to do in the future. What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
