Anyone choosing not to send their kids back to school in the fall out of fear of COVID-19? Not sure if I feel comfortable yet, and I need to let the school know by August 1st if I want my kid to do full virtual classes through December. We’re in NYC.

Common flu has a vaccine with a decent success rate and not all those kids dying die in a short span of time as compared to covid that has ravaged this world in the last 5-6 months. Again as I said K1 we will make all sorts of bs arguments and the truth is we all have become numb to the reality be cause that is a new norm.

like

G1 FACT: as of july 22nd according to the CDC between the ages of 5 to 14 only 16 kids have died from covid. And of those 16 how many of them did not have other significant issues (underlining health issues, car accident, gun shot wound) that contributed to the death? Elementary school kids are at such low risks. The fact remains way more kids die from the flu. There have been times where the flu shot was shown to be only 10 percent effective. 50-60 percent effective is best case scenario. And the flu shot has been known to give people the flu.

I think not until- 1. There is a clear and sustainable flat curve trend is showing and right now we are still on average 65K cases a day looking at only past 7 days. 2. People start behaving and take this seriously and by that I mean wearing face masks, maintaining social distance, stop gathering in large number in close confined places (restaurant and other public places) 3. Clear guidelines from authorities on what/what not do. This is important as few months back even the surgeon general was saying masks are not effective. Are you kidding me?? That’s how to stop spreading of contagious virus 101, ain’t that?

I live in California and my governor is not opening the schools. Good luck with your governors.

like

Good on him not to open. This is a public health issue, not a convenience issue.

like

My county in Texas pushed out school opening until September. Want my kids to go back to school. Elementary kids are not of any real risk with covid.

likefunny

You want those kids to lose their lungs?

Selected virtual option for safety reasons. Elearning for an elementary student was challenging in the spring and required a lot of parental support, navigating Google classroom, typing homework responses, etc. but at least we are more prepared to handle it.

like

Can we acknowledge that people are in a really tough situation right now and that this sucks for kids and parents through and through? Families have very different situations at home, and different needs for childcare and schooling, different risk factors at home, different case numbers in their states and counties. The amount of personal attacks and immature name calling on this thread is shocking from a bunch of professional adults. Just wanted to say this and then I’m unsubscribing because I don’t need this unproductive negativity in my life.

Leaning that way although I'm not entirely convinced that we'll even have the option to send them. Should find out this coming week if we have options.

like

Our school year starts after Labour Day. We have been told that the classes will be in-person, full time. But I suspect it’s a matter of time until an outbreak or two happen at elementary schools and all are shut down again.

like

We decided as a broader family that none of the kids will be getting in person instruction this school year.

like

Good luck. I wouldn’t chance it. Not at the expense of my children’s health.

We have decided for virtual school till Jan

Keeping the kids home. Not judging anyone if they decide to send their kids back tho cuz ultimately its their decision. I know few folks who passed away in NY and I wouldn’t risk it. CDC is flip flopping and it just seems like we don’t have a good grip on this virus.

like

Actually recent Berlin research states that kids had the same viral load as adults which shows that they infect adults and also another story showed that kids between 10-19 can be just as infectious as adults. They did say Kids under 10 do seem to be less infected but who knows how that will change in a few weeks. I agree with you tho, it does suck working and being a teacher, so not judging for the decision you’re making but I’m just saying for my family we decided it wasn’t worth the risk.

like

I’m planning to send, however I agree with SM1 - I don’t think it’s gonna he an option.

like

Soon as school is back in session yes they will be back in school. 100%

like

School is doing smaller class sizes, outside as much as possible, face masks indoors, extra cleaning, hand washing, sanitizing throughout the day. I am leaning toward sending them back. It’s very detrimental for these kids to just be in front of screens all day and without learning in a classroom setting. I understand the risks - my brother and sister in law are both nurses who had Covid - but I think we will send our kids and continue to live in our bubble and not expose them to grandparents, the public, etc as a precaution. My husband and I will continue to work from home.

like

I’m planning to start virtual and then reassess after the first quarter (NYC as well). I think we have until 8/7 to decide though, no? Official plans won’t be out until the first week of August.

like

Are you in a private school? Last I heard was suppose to have option to choose every quarter.

What do your kids say?
