Or have them say that you left nothing to do!!!!!!!!!
I am to the point where I just assume nothing will happen
My sub instructions are simple.
My students are trained and will do what I have told them to do.
You need to take attendance and be the adult in the room. I have deputized two students in each class, they will handle content related issues, play my direct instruction video and have answer keys for independent practice afterwards.
Please bring a book and enjoy your easy day.
If any issues arise please leave me a detailed note.
The only note I ever get back is "can you call me and explain what you did to get your students to act like this?" Or some variation of that.
I tell the students that acting up while there is a sub is an unforgivable offense, second only to dishonesty in my world.
I try to leave Brainpop,.Reading Assignment, puzzle or BillNye video and also tell my students if I get any complaints from the sub you will have a zero for the day and if the sub leaves me good notes you get double points. It generally works good with my students.
I make sure I request a sub that knows my expectations and I let my students know that it’s on them to get my work done.
I was a substitute before beginning my career as a teacher and I cannot believe how many “bad subs” there are. It’s amazing to me how hard it is to simply follow instructions for some people.
I think it’s better than you popping up catching them texting while the kids run wild. True story, another teacher called out during testing so I got the crappy sub and had to test her kids with no notice. Peeped in between sessions and the room was trashed.
every time without fail. that's why I have a folder of general plans based on a current events article from Newsela. If they're not going to take the time, why should I?
Oh, yes. The I do get upset about it as well.
I have my day broken down into 15 minute blocks with instructions. I'm a self contained special education room. I have lists of appropriate behavioral interventions for specific behaviors, as well as reinforcements. I have 2 TAs, and I rely on them a lot to make sure things go smoothly.
One time though I came back and a sub had rearranged my room and dumped students' individual supplies into one box. I was LIVID.
After many disappointing sub results, I just leave worksheets, grade them myself, and then record the grades. I have fewer issues and am less frustrated. Oh, and sub day work is not eligible for regrading. After a few students received a zero or two, they do what needs to be done when I have a sub.
I was a sub for 11 years before becoming certified. I am amazed at the lazy, disorganized and “babysitter” subs out there. I leave very detailed lesson plans with more work than they can complete, also have general lesson plans with helper students, students that might need extra assistance, etc. I forewarn admin and BST teachers of my absence. Then kids tell me the sub knitted or was on her phone all day! Or recently, never gave them the assignment stating to kids I left nothing. (This after peer teacher walked her through it!)
I don’t know the answer. As long as these “warm bodies” can get away with this, it will continue.
