Black Girl Magic ✨💫

Anyone completely lost touch with their childhood friends and some family members once they moved up in their career, income, and social status? How did it make you feel, how did you cope with it.

For me, it has less to do with money and more to do with priorities. Most of my childhood friends got married and started having babies right out of college (23-24) and I focused on my career. I just got married in September (34) with no plans for babies, right now. We just dont have a lot to connect on anymore 🤷🏾‍♀️

I guess it depends on what the reason for the divide was? I am the first person in my entire maternal family to go to college and make triple of what most of my family members make coming out of a rural area. Same for some friends who did not make it out. My husband and I income wise fit into the upper middle class I would say. However I always stay grounded and love visiting my family and friends back home. Every chance I get I let them know how much I love them. It reminds me of my roots and who I’m working so hard for. I never feel like I’m better than anyone from my fam & friends circle so we still have a great time and I don’t feel out of place at all. I grew up without money so now I don’t really place much value on it - happiness is what is important to me. I love to pay homage to my Southern roots by using colloquialisms and speaking often of my small hometown. It’s what makes me unique and wouldn’t change it at all.

D1 sometimes I feel bad about it, but then when I try to reach out to them it's hard to connect because they are still on the same ghetto shit from 10+ years ago and it's hard to pretend to be interested and supportive of consistently poor life choices. I hate to sound judgemental, but its like the lack of personal growth or desire to want to do so is distressing. I'm also afraid of getting sucked back into the energy and mentality.

I'm still close with my childhood friends, even though we are all in different stages of our lives. I have a handful of childhood friends. I always kept a small circle. What helps is we dont live anywhere near eachother, so we dont communicate often. In fact we are all bad communication but when we do see eachother we are genuinely interested in each others lives. Also, on the flip side, our goals in life and experiences may be different but we don't judge eachother. I've made alot of mistakes along the way and they are the only ones I trust with those secrets. Recognize your situation sounds different but just giving my experience.

Its exhausting also I'm tired of them saying she thinks she white now. Personally chosing to disassociate yourself with ghetto shit doesn't necessarily mean I think I'm white. I feel like I'm being mislabeled as a sell out

If we enforce military style lockdown, we take a huge economic impact but save a lot of lives. But America won’t do that because here money takes precedence over lives.
