Can someone help me feel more grateful for my job? I think I’m unreasonably miserable for how much I get paid but I can’t stop hating this job so much and feeling pissed every time I get an assignment.

As we head into a new month (with more billable hour targets to hit) just wanted to encourage y’all to keep pushing and stay strong, you got this! Unfortunately, because we work with so many other type A personalities, we don’t always hear about when we’re each having a tough time making it through the day/week/month. Does your firm let you take 28-30 December off? Many of my team members won’t be working those days and I decided last minute that I’d like to travel somewhere between Christmas and the New Year.

What is your firm’s policy for compensating female equity partners/shareholders who take the allotted amount of maternity leave (and thus may have collections from clients but no chargeable hours)? Are they just hung out to dry from a comp perspective for that year or does the firm step in and support from a comp perspective the hours lost as a result of maternity leave? Coming from a mid to big law firm with an eat what you kill structure and a single tier of partnership.

What file management system does your firm use? Lateraled a few months ago and my new firm uses eDOCS which is a stinky piece of crap. I used to use Imanage, which I didn't think too much about, but it's so so much better in retrospect.

I work primarily with an equity partner and counsel in an M&A practice servicing existing clients. It’s been slower than usual. Both of them tag team and keep mentioning I should get my hours up when neither of them bring in any business. Just searched iManage and found the firm billable hours reports. Turns out my hours each month are far exceeding both of theirs! Prolly wasn’t supposed to see the firm hour reports but wondering if I should push back. I don’t find their remarks well-intended.

Are you killing your career if you drop down from big law to mid law? 4.5 years in and I can’t deal anymore. Not even sure what my career goals are so maybe doesn’t matter. 2 cents?

M&A lawyers, what are some best practices you’ve picked up or expect from your juniors? Lateraled and realized my training on these “expectations” was sub-par. Thinking of things like: updating checklist daily, following up if seniors haven’t responded to questions, running and circulating redlines as soon as opposing counsel’s comments come in, setting calendar invites for any filing/notice deadlines, etc.

Any intel on the following NYC finance/banking groups? E.g. billable hours, friendliness/culture, experience opposite them in deals.
