We normally have a BIA (Behavior Intervention Associate) that handles behavior on campus. If they are unavailable, the school police will sometimes get the student. If a school doesn’t have a BIA they usually have something called a crisis intervention team of staff members that handle those situations. When you get the students are the parents being called? Are they EBD students, or just general behavior problem students?

My district is quite large and yes, I am in elementary. I have worked at 4 different schools and they have all had BIAs. If it’s happening with the same students regularly, I recommend data is taken each time (ex. anecdotal notes). If there is physical aggression towards another student in the class, ensure the other parent is notified and write an incident report (more data) and if a teacher is hit or harmed by the student, ensure they have it reported to workers comp (even if they don’t go to the hospital) and file a report with admin. If you collect enough data to prove a student needs a more restrictive environment (usually with behavior interventionist) they can get sent to a school that primarily deals with EBD students. I worked at a school like that before and there were MULTIPLE BIAs and paras to help with such behaviors.

Are you paid with Federal dollars (Title I)? If so, check and see what your guidelines say. Otherwise, keep a log of how you have to use your time each day. At the end of a week, add up how much instruction has been lost. Share this with admin.

We have 25 elementary buildings in our district. Unfortunately, mine is not Title I. We do keep track and it is shared, but then we just get a district person to come out and give ideas on how we can share the caseload or handle the kids better. I’m wondering how to get a change made without getting myself in trouble for speaking out.

I’m constantly summoned to help w dysregulated kids. Our district is investing in more para support this year but it’s always ‘all hands on deck’. It’s hard. Also depends on the behaviors (eloping, crying/screaming, hitting others, throwing items, flipping furniture, climbing on furniture, rolling around the floor, etc etc).

I would document how much time you’re spending on this and how many kids you’re not seeing and talk to admin (with the documentation).

Doesn’t sound like it’s in your job description if you were hired as a reading specialist. I would contact the union. You are being used as a “sub” to fill in for vice principal, counselor, SPED team, etc. You are a warm body with a schedule that can be “cancelled” because of a deemed emergency. It’s not an emergency if it’s happening daily. It needs to be planned for. Your students desperately need you and they are missing out. Their teachers should complain about this situation .

How do I respond to an observation score of a II in an area where I feel the score was unwarranted? I scored III in all other areas. The score was a II because I had students working on Google Classroom & was finishing up emails before I transitioned into the classroom reading. It’s the week before midterms, and I have duty for 20 minutes of my 50-minute planning period in 1st. I have to respond to these emails in a timely manner & all students were working diligently on the first assignment.

Nothing is working. Mom and dad both say that this is the only place he does this at. He will go just fine outside of school. Suggestions?

I currently contribute 8% ($6.4k yearly) to 401k and max our HSA & ROTH IRA. After that + regular spending, I have about $1k per month that I invest in a standard brokerage account. Traditional advice says to max out 401k before standard brokerage, but I also want to save for a down payment on a house in 7-10ish years. Do you think this is a good approach, or would you recommend more/less to retirement? I plan on contributing more to 401k as my salary increases. I’m 23 now
