Extremely. Downplays the struggles of people with ADHD and the benefits of stimulants for people with ADHD.
I agree with you. It completely downplays the situation.
The point of frustration is that this person is wondering if he/she has ADHD based on:
1. Adderall helping studying for bar;
2. Trouble focusing in general;
3. Always been pretty dozen/aloof
These are all highly stigmatized characteristics of ADHD and are so far from what it actually means to have ADHD and what the symptoms really truly look/feel like.
Plus, what idiot uses Fishbowl to get medical advice? Why is this person even asking for anonymous peoples opinions’ of an ADHD diagnosis… didn’t even post it in the ADHD bowl 🙄
So yes, this type of crap annoys me as it pertains to ADHD and the stigmas that come along with it.
Thank you. This is precisely why it annoyed me. That person has no idea the real executive dysfunction that ADHD sufferers deal with.
Not annoyed at all. So many people are undiagnosed with it, and so many people were raised in households/surroundings that told you "if you can't focus, you're just lazy".
I got diagnosed late (3rd year of law school), and it changed my life. After some trial and error, my doc and I found the right meds with the right dose, and I almost cried. It was a feeling I had never felt before. I wasn't hyperfocused, I wasnt unmotivated, I wasn't stressed and unhappy. I felt "normal".
I woke up thinking "hey I should start my day". And "hey I should finish this project". Maybe this person finally had a feeling like that after taking Adderall and it got him/her thinking.
Point is, we should be encouraging them to go see a doctor (not online, but one that's actually qualified), and find out for real - instead of shitting on them.
Although, I will admit I didn't read through the comments, so if that person is actually downplaying ADHD and fishing for pills, then fuck em

It’s annoying that people without ADHD are going to online doctors and obtaining medications they don’t need thinking it will give them an edge. This is why there is a medication shortage.
Unless, of course, ADHD is way more common than the world is willing to admit. I would be thrilled if this were the case because we could all stop pretending the “normal” way is “normal” and start embracing societal changes that are geared towards those with ADHD.
I don’t have any data support this, but I wonder if it’s as common as anxiety and depression. One day we’ll see more funding go into research (hopefully).
If they do end up getting diagnised with ADHD then good for them that they found something that works. But if they don't and are only taking Adderall for the kick of it, then that's extremely insensitive. How did they even get Adderall in the first place?
So I was “gifted” I school and got great grades without trying through about 9th grade when all of a sudden it was hard. I could struggle my way to good grades through high school and just fell off a cliff in college.
After struggling really hard and barely pulling Cs while pulling all nighters and obsessively studying to try to do as well as I knew I was capable of, I went to a psychiatrist and they said I had bipolar. I didn’t. The meds did nothing. But I did drop out of college and started bartending. Then I had a friend offer my cocaine one night. I snorted some and went to sleep. Someone mentioned it may be adhd because that isn’t normal and that’s what stimulants did to them. Nope, I said. That can’t be it. It’s my own fault. A problem with my will and discipline.
I restarted school and just overpacked my schedule and did a little better but still struggled. The person who mentioned I may have adhd offered me some adderal and I did theirs for a few weeks and shit was easy again. That was what prompted me to get proper help and my psychiatrist that time told me my story wasn’t uncommon.
Moral here: give that person a little grace. It’s really hard to come to that realization and they were probably looking for some fucking support.
Not as strong as the stuff you tried, but caffeine puts me to sleep! I think if someone finds a stimulant puts them to sleep, that should be a flag to get screened! Thank you for sharing your experience! There’s a lot of paths here!
Wait, he did what? If he is concerned about having ADHD, he should've gone to a doctor for a checkup. This is insensitive!
Another example of a young person taking advantage of Adderall. Like many have said, there's a shortage of it and people abuse the shit out of it. This person certainly doesn't have ADHD.
Yes. I just posted a super long comment in this thread actually.
Narc
Bowl Leader
A2 - this is a space for people with ADHD to relate and find community. It’s not a “narc” thing to feel discouraged by discussion about abusing meds, esp when many people in this bowl rely on those meds to function.
