Anyone else browse Linkedin to check on old classmates / enemies to see if you’re doing better career wise? It riles and fuels me up like nothing else. I love competition.

About half of my college friends (and college enemies) don't have Facebook or LinkedIn. I went to a military college and quite a few folks I know from them have made a career out of the military; what with opsec and all, it's hard to keep track of them. For the ones on LI, I prefer to look at them and wish them congratulations on their career successes, whatever they may be, especially the ones who are doing better than me. I'm waaaay past the stage of maintaining enmities with anyone from back then.

I used to and I agree -- it fueled me to do better most of the time but at some point I started getting the feeling that it just never ends. I needed to take time to feel content about where I was while gunning for the next thing. So now for me, it's become more a source of inspiration rather than competition. Ofc there's still remnants of the competitive side, don't get me wrong.

Sorry to hear that

You’re right, I’m sorry. Whatever works for you OP

Imagine living your life where LinkedIn is your source of self worth What's funny is other people are happy with their families, children, etc. And you need LinkedIn

Not a good look, OP.

It's the new Facebook

OP this is you (not Don draper) and all of your "enemies"

Fun fact: you can export your connections and wait a quarter or two, export a newer version and do a vlookup to see which connects moved positions/got promoted etc.

May be this could be a feature that linkedin could sell as Premium Plus.

I used to do that but realized it's not actually a competition. I can be happy for other people when they advance in their careers. Also, some people who are very high performers dial things back to deal with tough personal issues or desire better work-life balance. Work is not the end-all-be-all but it's a tool to provide income for other parts of my life.

like

OP you should compare yourself to other Googlers. Your insecurity will shoot through the roof.

likefunny

This! My imposter syndrome went through the roof since I started. Saving grace is that the people are really great here.

Lol definitely not, who cares? 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

I'd rather be wealthy and retired than working a low-paid high prestige career

Yeah absolutely

Yes, totally!

Seems kinda... idk, insecure.

But you work at google... and you think you’re winning?

Since this is an anonymous forum, I'll admit that I do this. It never actually makes me feel better, though. It mostly just intensifies my insecurities and makes me anxious about my ratings and career advancement at work. Everyone else seems to be doing amazing things at work and with their lives in general, while I have few friends and am barely above average at work.

+1 We have all been there man - thanks for the honesty. I also fell to this pattern of behaviour when I was in consulting. Know that you are not alone. I feel like I have stopped using LinkedIn for this purpose as much over the last year or two (still guilty of the one-off days), because priorities have somewhat changed. Part of this, however, involves me actively keeping in mind that I have to own the consequences of different priorities (e.g. a focus on WLB might mean I do not get promoted as quick, or make as much in the next 5-10 years). If you continue chipping away at what you value in life, you can materially change your circumstances, and maybe even your job, and will naturally find that you spend less time scouring LinkedIn for benchmarking purposes.

Absolutely! I thought I was the only one 😆

Oof slick burn OP 🙄

Interesting take, seems primitive. But I can empathize. I’m happy for my friends and peers to be doing well. I’m not in competition with any of them. Their success does not take away from my success. I wish everyone to be doing well in life. If my colleagues are doing well, and I’m doing well - most likely the economy is doing well which means everyone is winning.

Vuzix, got in at $4.50 and this company is going places. Their smart glasses can be used across nearly all industries and has a ton of applications, and they hold critical patents for their industry. Very long on this one - cell phones went from clunky to sexy in just a few years. The wearable tech is getting better and better by the day and the pricing more affordable, just about to gain steam. High insider ownership and no selling with the run up or attempts to raise capital

New hire starting nov 29! Have a couple of questions: I need to travel for DStart and it starts at 11am on a Monday, could i drive or train in on Sunday night and book a hotel through Deloitte for two nights instead of one? And if I drive in how does Deloitte pay for mileage and do they pay for city parking? And how does expensing meals work? For example, the orientation ends on 5:30pm on Monday and 4pm on Tuesday can we expense dinners after orientation? Sorry for all the questions!
