I feel like my brain is jello the first full week to be honest. 😵‍💫

Stub first year, I guess just first year now, I’ve had zero billable assignments this week. Very worried.

What are some easy to make, low stress holiday meals for a school holiday staff party? I was "volunteered" by our principal to set it up this year (🙄). I'm making decorated sugar cookies but kind of drawing a blank when it comes to savory dishes. Bonus points if you have any adult holiday themed games or fun drinks to suggest! It's off school property and there will be a bar (thank god), for context.

My bf took a guys trip to Caribbean to celebrate a good friend of 20+ year’s milestone bday. The friend’s bday is the day before mine. Normally bf and I trip for my bday over the holiday weekend. Bf will be back for my actual bday, and we’re taking a domestic trip next weekend. That said, I still feel a little miffed that we’re not spending this weekend together like normal. Are my feelings unreasonable?

I am at a DoD focused startup that is drafting their military leave policy.

Our PTO is Flexible Leave = they don’t track days worked in return for days off

The draft military leave policy:
- 2 weeks of annual AT can be flex leave
- 2 days allocated a year for PT test

I previously worked at Deloitte and loved their military leave policy, so I am pushing for 2 weeks of AT allowed and 80 hours a year for travel to drill/medical appts/misc days you have to meet active counterparts.

Thoughts?

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

I've been working full time for 13 years and need a break. Thinking of taking a sabbatical and would like to spend some time in Europe, thinking about doing some kind of studying/short course abroad. Have any of you heard or done something like this before? Any ideas? The course could be anything really, doesn't even have to be work/consulting related. Preferably something low stress that I'd still learn from.

Desi folks on visa, my company is preparing to file for perm to start GC process. I have over 11 years of work ex and have an approved I140 from previous company. This company’s immigration firm is asking for a VERY specific work experience letter from previous employers. For the most part I have got it from them but these guys are looking line by line from the job description and wants everything on the letter. I think this is too much and being nit picky plus no employer would even give what..

I don't think I have ever felt so stupid before. My firm recently hired someone who was barred in 2021. I was barred 2019. I took it as I was senior to him and tried to mentor him. Well the joke is on me. Because he worked for the govt for some years before becoming an attorney, they made him a SENIOR associate. He has 0 prior attorney experience. Yet he's a senior. I have no words.

I’m planning on leaving my firm at the end of the year. Is anyone who switched firms this year still paying social security tax on their wages even though they are past the SS taxable wages threshold ($137,700 in 2020)? I just realized my SS tax “bonus” hasn’t yet kicked in this year even though it should have two paychecks ago, and I’m thinking it’s because my new firm’s payroll system doesn’t “realize” that I already paid a bunch of SS tax at my old job this year. Not sure how to fix this..do I just have to wait until I file my tax return for 2020?

In house attorneys: how flexible is your schedule? I see people write that they work 8-6 or 9-5 in house, but do you have set hours, or like a law firm, are your hours a little bit flexible (come in later sometimes, come early and leave early, etc)? Can you work remotely as easily as at a firm? Block off an afternoon for a doctors appointment without scheduling PTO like you would at a firm (as long as your work got done)? I’m sure it varies between companies, but just wondering generally.
