McKinsey & Company Bain & Company Hiiii! I’ve been at my job for a year and a couple of months now & I’ve gotten rather bored because the work is repetitive, not challenging, and hasn’t really allowed me to learn or grow as much as I would’ve liked to. Given how I’m still paying a ton of money for my postgrad in Business Comms (that I haven’t really gotten the chance to use), I’ve been thinking of entering the world of consulting. We need not have more Californians move here. But I suppose as long as you leave your politics at the state border and don’t cause a ruckus with them protests, we’ll be okay. Please feel free to drive up our housing costs, though! Said from a former Californian.
A couple things to keep in mind on a more serious note: cost of living is affordable outside of the Nashville metro area. Davidson and Williamson counties are very expensive. You need to live somewhere in the boonies to get a good deal on my end. If you want to stay in that general area. Chattanooga has lower costs and is becoming a tech hub.
While we don’t have income tax, property tax is higher. Additionally, keep in mind you pay more sales tax compared to California. The weather can be a shock for those expecting blue skies 300 out of the 365 days a year.
Personally, I love Tennessee and don’t see myself living anywhere else. I just wish we weren’t so popular because it’s driving up housing and traffic...And introducing the CA things I ran from like their liberal ways and everything vegan.
A1: no one should be able to argue with health benefits of a vegan diet
-not a vegan or Californian
I live in TN...it’s is a great place to live...but when it comes to no taxes, you get what you pay for 🙃 (AKA, public schools are bad and there is no real transit, etc., etc.)

Adding to this, keep in mind unemployment caps out at $275 a month (excluding current affairs) so your emergency fund should be bigger. There is no disability insurance like CA—will need to get Afflac or something similar.
But we do have land... lots of land. And land that doesn’t catch fire each year. So there’s that...
it’s the racism and homophobia for me...
CA to TX for me
@D2 check the stats bruh.
If you don't like them you can go full Texan and shoot them, just don't be surprised when that doesn't change them.

Lived in FL, ME and TN. TN is the easiest and cheapest by far. If you wear a red hat or can tune out the BS rhetoric in Nashville you will be fine. But if you are looking for a state that values things like a women’s bodily freedom or diversity, then TN isn’t it.
PS - Nashville is still kinda cool but becoming an infrastructure mess with high prices. East TN is beautiful but remote and gets more rain than Seattle, and west TN is just hot and sticky AF.
forget schools. Apparently TN has some terrible people

Shouldn't you want people moving to the state who are similar in socioeconomic status as you? I'm confused as to why people who are gainfully employed are so threatening to the status quo?
Are you afraid of housing prices increasing? Not sure how much that matters for most since y'all don't seem to be from the "big city".
Also, the majority of people like me moving in will have the option to WFH. Wfh technologists or consultants won't hurt traffic trends too much.
Are y'all actually afraid of turning blue as a state? Is this something that keeps you up at night?
It's just a shame because if you keep saying go away, many of us will find other options for places to contribute financially and through community engagement.

Just moved to TN from NYC for the LCOL. There are a few differences as others have pointed out, but I plan to vote Republican, buy a car, and send my kid to private school - so I should be all set.
Lol, fair enough 🤷🏻♂️
We love it here, even though we vote blue and send kids to public schools
Wow...these posts are just...wow.

Id much rather live in TX or FL for a no income tax state. TN has terrible schools.
I have no kids and may deal with HCOL in 6 years or whenever my kids are not a hypothetical
Ew
I spent a year traveling every week to Memphis for a project and I can't think of any reason to move to TN. I couldn't wait for Thursday to come and get out of there.
Honest question, there are other states with LCOL and no income tax, why TN?
