Anyone else experience people getting promoted unjustly because they are social with their leadership outside of work, even though they aren’t ready or don’t deserve the position?

Half of the battle in this industry is building those relationships. Being a rock star is great, but you also need to be personable and have good social skills.

i’m 99.9999999% sure you’re simply failing to understand exactly what it means to “deserve” a promotion in finance. grunt work and analytical skills are important but totally fungible. relationship building is not. proceed accordingly.

I mean that’s 70% or how people get promoted. If it wasn’t that, senior managers wouldn’t have to do roundtable and vote for promotion

Any fish with experience moving to an internal, non-consulting role with their firm and have an opinion on making the move now? Would be promotion (which I am unlikely to get in my area of the org due to freezes) but very aware of the old adage “if it’s not billable, it’s killable.” No layoffs yet and no pressure for me to move out of consulting, but this may be an option to level up and maybe have a better exit in 18 months. Thoughts?

After seeing a bunch of the posts on here about some of the exit opportunities people here have posted, I started applying a couple months ago. I just got an offer that's a little under 3x my current comp... And I'm totally speechless. Thank you to everyone here for motivating me to look for that next opportunity!!!

Last May I was volunteered for a stretch role that lasted 10 months, then corona hit so no real downtime after. Now getting volunteered to backfill a SM for an early promo. Like I want it, but I am not sure if I can do 1.5 years in a row of stretch roles without completely burning out :-( I only have been able to take 1 week off over the past year.

Any tips for asking about a job as I reach the end of my internship? It’s coming towards the end of my contract and I wanted to have a chat with my CD to ask if there is the potential of a position at the end of it. Obviously with COVID I am not expecting anything and, if there isn’t, no hard feelings at all. Does anyone have any tips for how to broach the subject?

Genuinely asking. Should I hang up on or continue an interview with a CD when they ask me to tell them about my work in my portfolio because they haven’t looked at it at all even after I gave them my portfolio link after they requested for it? They’ve had an entire week to at least skim through. It’s one thing to ask me to tell them about how I approached it etc but to outright admit you didn’t even look at my portfolio? Not trying to be entitled but Idk man

In my career (3 YOE) I’ve always worked in the Financial Services industry but have always had a passion for Life Science and Health Care and want to work in those industries instead. I’ve heard from multiple people at the PPMD level that this is a common situation and many people want to switch between those industries. Is this true? Are there other industries that people like to switch between? Why do you think this is?
