Anyone else feel like consulting attracts many people who are “soft”? I feel like the lack of accountability for our advice, culture of walking on eggshells to appease clients, never having to (cont)

OP I agree and was just talking about this today and ready to edit to industry. Tired of doing “whatever it takes” to appease the client and tired of our PMs not having the guts to push back on a client when the team is spending 3-4 hours a day driving to be on site for a technical team where dev work can def be done off site. Quality of work is definitely affected, but yet saving face is more important

like

Consulting is more about finesse as much, if not more so, than hard skills OP. You are navigating politics, perceptions, expectations, and critical problems. Clients hire B4 firms to manage critical business problems at multiple levels throughout the organization. Contractors, boutique firms, tech delivery firms, and even employees can snuff out the small issues and deliver quality products. What we do is pull off things that can’t get off the ground and get them up in the air. These are complex and difficult-to-acquire skills.

OP i in fact think the exact opposite. This is a high feedback loop profession. You always hear about someone who either hates you or thinks you arent good enough/ dint do something right. I think people who have survived consulting without falling prey to self doubt, anxiety and depression are in fact tough as hell!

like

OP, i disagree. It’s a generalization and all generalizations are false.

funnylike

This isn't at all how I feel, but I can see why you think so. I think appeasing clients is less about being soft, and much more about ensuring the clients continue to buy our services. Also, I've met some of the strongest most hard working individuals in Consulting. Yes, most of us don't know what we want to do, but I don't think that has anything to do with being soft or having a poor work ethic.

like

Not poor work ethic. Quite the opposite. But it does attract “yes” people. Who will say yes to anything and not stand up for themselves for fear of not looking capable instead of holding ground and pushing back on disrespectfulness etc

You guys are just mercenaries. You are paid to support the buyer within the firm who brought you in. Any deliverable you create is for their agenda and perspective and to navigate the firm’s politics. Unless you are directly responsible for the follow-on implementation work, there is a lot of subjectivity.

like

Right and I guess that’s what I’m saying. Mercenary culture attracts a certain types of people

Make a decision about where you want to spend your career just attracts a ton of people who are not very mentally tough

likesmart

As opposed to what industry that has “tough” people? Please don’t say the military or anything of that sort..

like

Idk that life doesn’t sounds like any fun or happiness to me

Consulting attracts a lot of smart and ambitious people. Now the ones that end up staying, well...................

like

couldn’t you just as easily say it attracts “type A” sorts who can speak up and aren’t afraid to ask questions (e.g. pmo stuff, tracking, deadlines, project plans)?

likehelpful

From my experience, you need to have thick skin to make it in consulting. Those that don’t, don’t last long, and/or are very unhappy, dissatisfied

like

So what you are saying is that we are our clients bitches. You are right. Consulting does not attract the best and the brightest but it does attract people who are willing to play “the game”

like

Definitely at EY!

like

It’s a generalist profession and so filled with such people as you’ve described.

like

Not for the implementation side. We spend our time managing without authority over clients, helping them make the right decision, teaching them why sometimes No is the right answer. Maybe you’re more sales focused?

like

I agree. On the tech/implementation guide, our scope is clear—to get the client to go live with something they can use. I’d argue that it takes a lot of toughness and finesse to get through the yelling, whining and foot-dragging that comes along with that.

like

This certainly isn’t all and maybe not even most but it’s definitely something I’ve noticed

like

Yeah but work ethic isn’t really what I mean when I say not mentally tough. I mean more just being able to go through absolute shit or to just go all in on something to get something worthwhile on the other side. Ppl in consulting definitely work long hours or whatever It’s more the indecisiveness and lack of grit that I guess I’m pointing to

helpful

no one should be appeasing...they should be advising and collaborating

like

There was a good ft opinion column on this which phrases it slightly differently. If memory serves, the term that was used was ‘insecure overachiever’ which I think gets to the root of your point

like

Idk entrepreneurs, investors, etc. - people that find jobs make themselves accountable for their decisions?

Definitely smart ppl (at least in actual consulting work) but unaccountable nonetheless

A couple questions for the turnaround consulting fishes: 1. Is FP&A experience valuable for restructuring/turnaround consulting? I’m a CPA with experience in Big 4 FDD and a short stint in IB. Total work experience is a little over 2 years. I recently joined a RE company as a Sr FA in FP&A where I expect that I’ll be mostly doing budgeting & forecasting work. 2. If my goal is turnaround consulting, what should I focus on right now to best position myself? I appreciate any insights/guidance.
