Anyone else feel that healthcare employees get overly attacked for participating in a broken system? Always feels like many of their critics are throwing stones from a glass house instead of actually caring about the underlying issues...or am I missing something?
Says a consultant whose profession seeks to help companies avoid tax, avoid / mitigate consequences for crimes, and increase productivity so more workers can be fired.
I work in health insurance. Have done it both in industry and at Accenture. I like to make money and know this industry inside and out and have certainly profited off of it. I promise you the industry is not all about money though. These companies definitely do still care about the overall member experience. Health insurance profit margins are capped by law anyways.

Explain to me why we should be upset that people are making money off of providing a needed service for many people.
Its surprising it comes from consultants who would happily suggest a re-org and layoffs if it helps the clients!
None of the companies are saints and we play a small part in it. Try to make it good by doing some pro bono activities.
In the bigger picture, consulting is mostly about making wealthy people wealthier.
Everyone who thinks they're having a meaningful impact on the lives of those that are not well off is delusional.
I have similar reservations about starting to work in life sciences/healthcare consulting (in EU). Not sure what my marginal contribution to societal wellbeing would actually be.

How is "employees truly believe they're helping people" a "really weird culture", OP? Sounds like a good environment to me- people should feel like they do work that helps others.
Health insurance profit margins are capped by law, so making more profit means getting more customers, not raising prices. It seems like you just hate the idea of health insurance companies and are taking it out on employees.
It is hard to live in the US without health insurance, so many of those employees rightfully feel that they are doing a good thing by offering it, and it's not your place to take away their satisfaction with work.
