Anyone else feel like health insurance companies (Cigna, CVS, Anthem, etc) have really weird cultures? Always feels likes many of their employees truly believe they’re helping people instead of just squeezing every penny out of people’s health...or am I missing something?

Used to work at cvs and have quite a few pharmacist friends who work there now. Trust me, helping people is not the main concern. The bottom line is.

My daughter worked their and the nonsense is unreal. I told her to think real hard about her future and she decided to leave.
She’s much happier now.

Anyone else feel that healthcare employees get overly attacked for participating in a broken system? Always feels like many of their critics are throwing stones from a glass house instead of actually caring about the underlying issues...or am I missing something?

I work in health insurance. Have done it both in industry and at Accenture. I like to make money and know this industry inside and out and have certainly profited off of it. I promise you the industry is not all about money though. These companies definitely do still care about the overall member experience. Health insurance profit margins are capped by law anyways.

Its surprising it comes from consultants who would happily suggest a re-org and layoffs if it helps the clients!

None of the companies are saints and we play a small part in it. Try to make it good by doing some pro bono activities.

In the bigger picture, consulting is mostly about making wealthy people wealthier.

Everyone who thinks they're having a meaningful impact on the lives of those that are not well off is delusional.

I have similar reservations about starting to work in life sciences/healthcare consulting (in EU). Not sure what my marginal contribution to societal wellbeing would actually be.

How is "employees truly believe they're helping people" a "really weird culture", OP? Sounds like a good environment to me- people should feel like they do work that helps others.

Health insurance profit margins are capped by law, so making more profit means getting more customers, not raising prices. It seems like you just hate the idea of health insurance companies and are taking it out on employees.

It is hard to live in the US without health insurance, so many of those employees rightfully feel that they are doing a good thing by offering it, and it's not your place to take away their satisfaction with work.

As someone with ADHD, the impulsive side of me speaks up in meetings without fully processing the information. Then when corrected, I beat myself up for the rest of the day.

What has ended up happening over time is that I have started to come off as an introvert (because of the fear of being wrong) and also with low confidence. This is not a good trait in client facing roles where we are constantly making recommendations and clients look up to us.

Anyone else deal with this?

I've been following the Supreme Court mess all weekend, and it makes me not want to live in the US anymore. I was raised in a very conservative household and, as a mom, the idea of avoidable abortions makes me incredibly sad. But at the same time, how can people not recognize that eliminating legal abortions is just going to increase maternal mortality rates???

I was laid off and my last paycheck didn’t have my 401K deduction taken out, and the company match wasn’t made either. I contacted the company and they said because I wasn’t an employee when they cut the check , I’m not eligible to contribute. However, the pay was earned for hours worked before my layoff. There was no severance or vacation pay. This seems to be a violation of Federal law. Am I missing something? Should I open a case with the IRS?

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.
