Anyone else feel like the firms preach that you should ask for upfront feedback, but then when you do, managers never give constructive feedback? It's always, you're doing well or it will show on your review, but then the review is just a few subjective sliders lol never anything actually helpful

Ask better questions. “The better the question. The better the answer. The better the world works.”

You’re not asking the right questions. Don’t take the responses you are being given. Ask for additional feedback, ask direct questions, site specifics (what can I do better? How can I improve? What can I do to enhance my learning? Etc) It’s also best to set up periodic touch points on larger projects.

Most are too scared to provide true constructive feedback. It’s really hard to do it in a manner that doesn’t piss someone off. Most of us in “management” roles aren’t great at that, we’ve moved up because we’re good at the work and still learning how to manage people.

like

Absolutely. I remember being a senior and getting destroyed in my upward feedback from the associates because of how I approached feedback for them. Guess who refused to give anyone feedback for the next 6 months until my coach noticed and worked with me on it?

It’s not easy and most people avoid the hard things so it’s easier to give general “good job” feedback that is useless than feedback that will actually help someone.

I've learned you just have to take initiative. Set up a call and discuss. Don't let them get away with just the write up.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

How do you not care / stress way too much about your job? I am a mom and stressed out most workday evenings thinking about the work / interactions during the day. I have heard TEd talks about compartmentalizing job vs personal life , mindfulness etc , but I don’t change. I could literally leave my job & focus on kids alone & be fine as husband is in a executive position. Yet, it’s my own career focus & my self induced stress and pressure that takes a toll on me.
