Anyone else feel like work/billable hours gets in their way of taking care of their life? Hate having to choose between working to keep up with billables and taking care of my life whether that's the gym or whatever else. Feel like I never have enough time for both.

Yep. But I always prioritize taking care of my life. In the grand scheme of things, this job is not as important as people make it out to be. Always prioritize yourself.

The only reason my taxes got done this year is because my husband did them. The only reason grocery shopping or laundry gets done is because he does it. I’m useless at the everyday life things because I work so much. I took a walk before starting work this morning for the first time in a year and felt guilty about it.

like

@SA1, I actually do that if I don’t take notes! I’m a pacer by nature. I frequently jump up mid phone call to walk in circles while I talk.

I try to never let it get in the way of the gym but I am also not raising a family or taking care of others. I would encourage you to spend at least 30 minutes working out 3-5x a week. Then I lump all other life chores for Sunday lol…

likefunny

When I was in biglaw and needed to have more work life balance I started doing one Sunday chore on weekdays - just made my weekends a little nicer. Some combo of throwing in laundry on Monday, but folding on Tuesday, and ordering grocery delivery for Wednesday, for example, meant I just had cleaning and some meal prepping on Sundays. I’d clean the kitchen on Sundays afterwards. Made me feel like I had a little more control of my life outside work... which I had zero control over.

@A3 actually he says he likes my body better now. I went from 135 to 150 over the past year. And my clothes don't fit. I'm not happy with it. He says he prefers it. Well, tough.

Always. I left big law for that reason. Wasn’t worth it for me. Life goes by quickly. I spent almost 15 years of it working 10-15 hour days. It was ok in my younger days but especially after I had a family it was unsustainable. However now that I see the other side, I wish I hadn’t worked my youth away sometimes. I suppose my path led me to my current success so I don’t regret it but I do wonder if it was worth it.

like

Hi! Could i ask you, what particular job do you wish that you took instead of big law? I’m a second year lit associate and similarly feeling like I am wasting my youth and best years behind a screen.

Outsource as much as you can (obviously can’t outsource working out at the gym...yet). Your time is precious so money spent reclaiming it is well worth it. Have someone else clean your apartment, do laundry, iron your clothes, have a meal plan delivered to you, etc. so you can spend your little free time with your friends and loved ones instead.

Agree with all of this!

Yeah. I didn’t submit a claim to my health insurance last month because I forgot and was too busy to call during work. You win some, you lose some. Appointments and errands tend to lose

like

I need to deal with the IRS over some BS, but their phone lines are only open during work hours…

A8, you’re home by 6 after billing 10 hours?

like

I go to bed around 10pm usually, if you need 8.5 hours of sleep to function not sure what to tell you lol, that’s going to be hard to fit everything in a day regardless

I find that most people are addicted to caffeine and that the caffeine intake typically inhibits their ability to sleep and also their ability to wake up naturally and function at a performing level

Yeah, of course. It is beyond that — it completely changes who I am.

like

I always put myself last. I hate it. So I stopped putting in as much effort into caring for my husband’s family, who are all so demanding and wants me/us to attend or host every single freaking family functions, even the distant family functions. Lots of fight and tears but IMO, better to be divorced and have somewhat of a healthy functioning body than to be hospitalized trying to be a good DIL for people who ultimately does not care about my well being.

like

Yes. I feel like I can only do my work and home/family stuff mediocre at best. I can do one or the other well. But not both at the same time. And forget about health and fitness. Not unless I take stimulants.

like

I mean do you all have to Bill 15 hours a day or something? Genuinely don’t understand the problem, I workout in the morning, Bill 10 hours, and home before 6 everyday and have time to cook/clean/chores/relax
