Anyone else feel overlooked as an Asian in the workplace? It’s like you get only the disadvantages of being a minority with none of the benefits.

All the time. No majority group perks but also no real diversity initiative efforts (in fact most of them are explicitly anti-asian if you check their target numbers). No other racial group gets hurt from both sides.

I’m Indian. I completely agree. We need to have a seat at the table when it comes to Diversity and Inclusion. But remember: no one is going to hand you anything. Read up on the Black Civil Rights Moment in America. Black Americans weren’t handed their rights - they fought for them and are still fighting for them to this day. If you want to address the bamboo ceiling, racial stereotypes in media (see: Apu on Simpsons, Raj on Big Bang Theory), and misguided “ORM” statuses for Affirmative Action then you need to get involved. Politically. Civically. Economically.

Maybe you should be proactive and participate in, create or expand on employee resource groups. No one is going to give you a seat at the table, like any other minority, you have to make that space for yourself.

OP has no one ever automatically assumed you were smart and subsequently most likely right because of your race?

I hope you realize being able to easily connect with other Asians isn’t an advantage exclusive to Asians... most races are able to connect with those of the same race. It really speaks to how disadvantaged we as Asians are. Also, as an Indian who was raised here (in the US) I definitely can’t connect with other Indians that didn’t grow up here but often feel that Indians who DID grow up here explicitly avoid other Indians. That’s been my experience my entire life, from high school to college to work, in areas where there were a lot of Asians as well as in areas where there weren’t. Could be anecdotal but I’ve had the few Indian friends I’ve had tell me similarly. Feels like being disadvantaged from all sides. Plus ERG groups do nothing for us at least at ACN. We have one event all year to celebrate Diwali and only the older generation folks show up to talk to those their own age and leave. Not to mention I hate the stereotype of “cheap offshore resources” that Indians have. At least treat us like humans. And if you’re going to use terms like “dirt-cheap” to describe people of my race, don’t say it to my face pretending that I’m not Indian just cause I don’t have an accent.

My spouse feels similarly. Has suffered remarks, sometimes feels "other" despite being raised in America. More in some places than others. If they didn't have Asian features no one would know they were naturallized as a toddler. Truth is spouse just wants to be viewed and treated as American. A regular Midwest born, east coast educated, civic minded, sports loving American.

I see it with my wife, who is of Asian descent and works in the healthcare profession. There are no quotas about accepting more Asians into medical programs or residencies, getting promoted through the ranks within the hospital and in fact there are many situations where the system is actively trying to attenuate the growth of more Asian med students, residents, etc.

like

It’s surprising to me that there is such a sentiment because I have such high regard for my Asian counterparts

So true

Look into the Asians in consulting fishbowl, but to answer your question somewhat yes. I'm the only asian in my entire department, it definitely feels isolating, but there are more to people than just your race; you find different ways to connect to your coworkers and your clients.
