They’re way more chill than they used to be. Believe it or not
Anyone else feel the homeless should have a home?
Not many of them pay 3x the rent though so……..
Well, we're not going to allow shooting them for sport, if that's what you're hoping for. Sounds like you need to move to Alpharetta.
I think the real problem is why are there so many homeless people. What had caused the uptick. What can be done to help people before they get to this stage. What additional services are needed for those with mental illness.
Yes, they are supposed to be corralled up at the edge of town; must of been let loose by the radical left democrats
I understand that what you are going through is rough and frustrating but the tone of this post is not it.
Exactly
Democrat policies! I left California because of the shambles it is in with extremely high rates of living, taxes out of control, crime, and theee most homeless populations I’ve ever seen. Literal cities on the sidewalks( All due to it being a Democrat run state)
As ATL becomes more and more blue, the homelessness will continue to get worse , the crime will get worse, taxes will get worse.
CCIC, and the second highest was Sumter, which I have literally never heard of down in South Georgia. It’s a rural district and has the same crime rate as Atlanta.
Plus you have to take into consideration that black people and other minorities are policed more and also charged more with crimes, falsely inflating crime rates for area they live in. Either way, like I said previously, Atlanta isn’t at a significantly higher crime rate than some of the rural counties in the state, it’s right at the same level.
Welcome to Atlanta
Are you willing to pay the higher taxes that would be necessary to get these people the stable housing, mental healthcare, substance abuse treatment, etc… they need to not be homeless/a nuisance? Your frustration is totally understandable, but wishing the homeless away isn’t an effective solution.
100% agree that the current approach is not working. “Locking them up” generally costs more than helping them though. Politically speaking, no one seems to want to pay for either, so here were are.
That’s more so an issue with your building’s security especially if they can get in to steal packages. Homeless tend to congregate around or near downtown areas and Midtown is a stone’s throw away from downtown so it makes sense to see them
That and constantly walking into traffic to ask for money at almost every expressway exit and traffic intersection is a huge safety hazard especially at night with reduced visibility.
Nobody is willing to cough up the needed funding, nor does anyone want them housed in their neighborhood
Totally. If only those pesky homeless people would just stay in their place……
I don’t see any solution for it. Politically, blue cities are just going to dig their heels in and say the same thing- “We need more money, we need better housing.” That doesn’t address the massive drug problem causing insane behavior that no house or shelter will support. Getting a massive population off of meth or fentanyl is such a Herculean effort, it wouldn’t happen in our lifetime.
I just see people moving further out, away from it all. No one should put up with constantly getting sexually harassed just walking out their door.

IMO, blue cities have two key failings: one is opposition to new property development because they tie down development with absurd extra costs and regulations, keeping housing from being affordable. Second is ostracizing law enforcement, which then chooses to just ignore low-level and even some violent crime because they’re under resourced and it never leads to prosecution
I stopped using marta because of this. I lived right on a rail line and worked a few minutes away walking from another rail line. The most convenient possible arrangement and the aggressive panhandlers ruined it.
And people wonder why we don’t want to fund and expand marta.
Why does MARTA police move around by car, they’re policing a TRANSPORT SYSTEM? I’m sure they need some vehicles for bus and infra policing, but assuming the majority of people use trail the emphasis should be there…
I too love in midtown right on Peachtree St and although the homeless aren’t on my doorstep since I’m in a high rise when I walk Peachtree it I am surprised by the number of homeless. I’ve only been living in Midtown since 2016 (the burbs prior since moving to ATL in 95) but have had an office in the BofA Plaza bldg when not remote/traveling and the homeless problem certainly increased when the main shelters were closed. I dang near jumped in the street once because a homeless guy I’ve name suddenly spazzed out by the CVS. Atlanta can certainly do better. There’s no way I’d live on a walk out or single family home in most Midtown areas…to scary for me.
Idk how long you've been here but there have been homeless people here for a really long time. If you're moving to the city then that's part of it.
Thank Reagan for this. In 1967, Reagan signed the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, which led to state-run mental institutions being unable to hold people like this for treatment against their will (even if a judge recommended it). It was packaged as “The Patient Bill of Rights” but what it really did was lead to the mental health and homelessness epidemic we see today. These people may or may not be criminals, but they should be forced off the streets and into treatment for the sake of public safety. The only other place they go is jail, where they get zero help.
Yes. And we should probably open and fund better institutions now.
I agree. While homelessness has always been a problem, it seems that now they are more brave when it comes to harassing residents of Atlanta. Use to we looked at them as somewhat of an asset because you could give them a buck or two to help you out with directions or watching over your property etc. Like I said... Somewhat of an asset. Now you don't know if you going to be robbed, killed or raped. I guess they were afraid of police and they feared of being relocated. Their are new faces in the homeless community. Some choose that lifestyle while others don't have a choice. I guess it is because we allow them to harass without consequences. Police don't do anything because of being understaffed and catch/release. Atlanta use to be a beautiful city that you could brag about. Now it is crime ridden with homelessness out of control. My kid lives in midtown and there have been random shootings that don't involve the homeless community. Something is wrong here. Oh and the graffiti has turned into a huge problem as well. It's everywhere. If this keeps up we will lose any remaining interest in Atlanta.

I’m sorry to hear of the troubles your “kid” [adult /grin/?] is having in Midtown.
Midtown is the place to be for work & dining but it is still fringe for living there, even though housing is being pushed out by Emory & business.
Have you read about some of the amazing charity work we have in Atlanta? I like working from the side of donating & arranging stores & collecting outfits for clients of the clothing banks — and I love being able to donate all my soap & shampoo from every hotel I visit anywhere! I cleaned out my mother’s cabinets of those sample sizes the same way!
How much money or resources have you contributed or are willing to contribute to fight homelessness in Atlanta ?
You will not find your way to the kingdom of heaven. Hope you wind up on the streets one day, but I doubt you’d learn any empathy
