Anyone else find it kinda weird recruiters have the final say on technical positions? I get most of them can’t fathom not finding 100% of what’s in the job description, but shouldn’t a technical person be interviewing these roles? Half the people I speak with have 0 idea what I’m talking about. Basically talking to a bunch of glorified HR specialists who are of 0 help when they present you to the hiring manager. Just cut recruiters all together. Sham industry.

Definitely some truth to this but someone has to be the gatekeeper to filter through literally hundreds of applicants. Hiring managers would have zero time to do their job without HR saving them this time.

Recruiter here-

It is really a case by case basis. I have never, and will never act like I can talk shop with most of my candidates. Admittedly, I couldn’t tell the difference between Java or JavaScript if you put the code on a screen.

However, I don’t act like I know that stuff, either. Good recruiters will do their best to understand you, your background, why you’re in the market, what you’re looking for, salary expectations, etc.

How are you balancing health and wellness with demanding work schedules? Since COVID I have observed many of my non BIPOC peers working out during the work day. My calendar looks like Tetris and requires a ton of video calls. Shy of me working out at 0-dark-30 or late at night, I can’t see how I could possibly work out during the work day. What works for you? Clearly I’m doing something wrong.

Is it ok to be short and direct in an email? Do you ever do that with colleagues, admin, or parents? Or do you always take the time to add niceties like “I hope you’re well,” and “I’m sorry to reach out about this again” and “thank you so much for your perspective! I really appreciate it!” — before just stating your stance, reiterating what you already said, or asking a question?

Hypothetically speaking: You are interviewing w/the Hiring Manager. You are enthusiastic, well-versed and appropriately caffeinated. Throughout the interview, the HM yawns on camera - 4 times. Not your average yawn, more like a hippo yawn - including the sound that comes with it. Would you think they heard your answers during those yawns? Should you expect an invitation to the next round?

Interviewed for a company today. The remuneration package $120k-$180k/year [Base + % of Commission = OTE] (50/50 spilt).

They’re asking for an expected salary, if my expected salary is $100k/year, comes out to $8.3k/month.

Based on the $180k and paymix of 50/50, that means $90k is the base salary which is lower than my expected - is this correct? If so, what should I do?

Should I transition to a tech sales job? Thoughts on risk vs reward? I am 34 yo, married with a baby incoming. I have an MBA from the University of Chicago, not that it matters much in sales. I have always been in a consulting role but I think I can make more in sales. I have a competitive personality and I am bored.
