So yall all happy with yall comp plans?
Hi everyone, I'm currently a BDR at SF for the french market. And I'm questioning my next steps. One of the two possible path ahead of me are:
- SmB AE
- Enterprise corporate sales ("Little AE" working in large account with a senior AE)
Which way seems to be more profitable for my next career plan ? (I'm a little bit tired of cold calling all day though.)
Should I stay at SF more few years or switch elsewhere ?
Thanks for your help ! Salesforce

I’ve been in professional sales for over 20 years. I love my *job* and view it as just that: A JOB. I am passionate about it only to the extent that I want to be successful, I want to WIN but doing so while conducting myself in an ethical manner. It provides me excellent earnings and a good lifestyle —- which brings me to the answer to your question:
I don’t live for work, I work to live. What good can I do for my community with my financial resources? How can I use my influence to promote change? Do I have an opportunity to network to create visibility to a cause that is important? The title on my business card doesn’t define me, it’s what I do within my own sphere.
Now there’s always a fine line between personal and professional connections (do we all not have “the views expressed here are mine and do not reflect my employer” on our Twitter profiles? Sure..). But volunteering, advocating or simply using presentation/marketing/public speaking talents to further a personal agenda is transferable from your day job to where your heart guides you.
And NO - I’m not being political: I’m talking about whatever you’re passionate about. I don’t have kids but love cats 😻.. I was recently driving to a meeting (I would normally fly) and used that opportunity to transfer a foster kitty to an agency about 200 miles away. Point is, always look for opportunities to make the world a better place ... and you definitely do not have to change careers to do so! Just my two cents!!
Wow, thank you for the perspective. I think I get too idealistic at times thinking that if I don't devote my entire life to a "good cause" then I'm not living a life of meaning. But hearing your point about using your job for its stability/ resources/ skills development to amplify your impact elsewhere is truly inspiring. I have started using my free time volunteering, supporting causes I care about, etc. but sometimes it is exhausting to do at the end of a long work day. I definitely also work to live and enjoy my job enough that if I left, it would be due to an external pull rather than an internal push. I am going to reflect on where else I can apply my resources outside of work and hope that keeps me feeling meaningful for a good while.
I’ve been doubting it every day.
I’m a number 1 sales rep for my company, and the last year and a half has made me feel like I’m wasted talent.
I know every possible solution my company can bring a prospect and can tailor it to anyone, yet I’ve wasted months (probably years) of my life emailing and calling people who never respond. Recently, I’ll have terrific meetings, have redlined agreements in hand, and get ghosted.
The question is, what other career do we do?
@Sales Executive 1 -
I'm in a similar boat in that any change would probably require a pay cut. I do think a lot of sales skills are highly applicable in business, esp. in higher leadership/ management roles so you have plenty of options depending on where interests lie. I personally would either shift to a mission-driven NGO in my current industry or leave business altogether and get an MFA. I have a "deadline" in mind for when I'm going to either stay or pivot. Until then I'm trying to save as much as possible...
Not any more & that’s why I exited and left the industry. Life is too short!
@ Sales Executive 1 - One thing that I've heard is popular is that if you're interested in staying within the same industry or your organization, many companies allow internal/ functional transfers (i.e. Sales to Marketing, Brand, Ops)
I was in the same boat as you. I left a high paying car sales job and now I am investing in Real Estate. I buy houses at discounts ( I can show you How) and rent them. Renter pays principal, interest, taxes and insurance then leaves me about 500 per month cash flow. 10 of these and you will be able to leave your job to pursue this full time. It’s not easy but it sure beats working 9-5 every day.
