What market? What makes your book solid? How would you classify the kind of writer you are if you could based on work experience? Do you have digital experience. SEO?
You’re not alone from what I’ve seen here but the questions above factor in a lot. NYC is oversaturated.
You also may need to re-evaluate the kind of place you want to work. What’s important to you and what’s available play a role of course.
My writer buddy just went into real estate. He was good. Not saying you should but you should consider a strategy and possibly other locations wherever you are.
Happy to offer feedback on your book if you want to message me.
My background is part shopper, part digital, with a pretty broad range of experience (I’ve pretty much worked on everything.) That’s what I think my book reflects; a good mix of big, conceptual brand thinking and smart executional work with solid headlines and writing. Some print, some digital, some video, some retail. I’m just a very versatile all-around writer.
And I think I’m being reasonable. I’m not expecting to waltz into a top-tier shop anytime soon. I’ve worked in shopper, in direct mail, in field marketing, and I’m more than happy to stay in that lane.
Anyway, I’ll DM you my book. I’d appreciate the critique!
lol yes to put it mildly
Same level of experience and in NYC going through the same. The agency lull is real. I have good agencies under my belt, a mix of big and small shops and good recommendations and portfolio. Recruiters are always impressed by my resume but I've been getting mostly lukewarm interest after interviewing - and get the sense there's a lack of urgency to hire. Most of the roles I've interviewed for are still open after a couple of months so don't know what it is... I'm on month 3 of searching and definitely getting disheartened. But helps to hear others in the same boat.
Yeah, exact same boat. Imma keep paddling for a while, and hopefully things work out for both of us soon.
same
I just spent close to a year interviewing and trying to get a new job. Got three in person interviews that I didn’t land and chatted with another 3 or 4 that never came to anything. I still get hit up sometimes but just took an in house job to try something new and get a title and pay bump. Hiring and jobs seem few and far between and low paying right now.
Same same. It’s been rough. Can we make this a party boat?
As someone who’s been drunk on the Staten Island Ferry on more than one occasion, every boat’s a party boat if you have the will.
Same in the U.K. right now too. Ours is a genuine wait and see moment due to Brexit and the issues that is having on clients confidence with budgets etc. People are just having that ‘wait and see’ moment. However, we’re just hitting another major cycle in the agency of a ton of people handing their notice in too... so I think the movement will start to appear. (Or there will be a LOT of people freelancing)
Do you have awards? If so, make sure to mention them on each project and on your site. A lot of agencies still look for awards
Same.
