Anyone else hate the fact that being out for a weekend (Friday night to Sunday night) to take a trip, go to a wedding, family event etc. is often looked upon as thought you’re on vacation/I’m missing a work day?

Yeah for sure. I get that weekend work is part of the job but having to be 20 minutes from your laptop all weekend unless you’re on “vacation” is ridiculous and contributing to my exhaustion.

like

That’s the thing that is driving me nuts. I’m in M&A so most weekends I always end up having to work 3-5 hours with the lousier ones being closer to 12+. But sometimes I have a wedding or I’m visiting family or I just went to take a trip with my spouse for the weekend where I’ll be more out of pocket ie hiking a National park etc and partners act like I’m taking a Wednesday off, get pissed I’m not available within the hour for a call, didn’t get coverage while I’m “out” or at times if an international deal, be available for a late night or 5 am call. I’m just so burned out from it. I’ve worked plenty of weekends but the perception, judgment and crap I get for the occasional mostly out of pocket weekend is awful.

like

Sorry to say but it’s kind of the nature of the job. I’m a senior M&A associate and in my experience most partners won’t hit you up on the weekend unless there’s an actual need. So if they’re hitting you up it’s likely they’re working too at whatever odd hour it is and it’s because that’s what the client/deal require. Not saying it’s not exhausting and that it doesn’t suck, but this is kind of what you sign up for. Best way if you want to avoid it and also keep doing M&A is to go to a lower-tier practice / avoid cross-border work. That’s what I did and it has made a meaningful difference (not all roses, but not what you’re describing all the time, and I still get paid the same).

Yeah I hate the new normalization of OOO messages during weekends.

like

Since I’ve had kids the weekends have been somewhat easier to protect because I need a babysitter in order to work a ton of weekend hours. Of course I get care on weekends before a big filing, but outside of that I don’t normally get child care in the weekends. The sorry I don’t have childcare right now, but I’ll get to it on Monday has spared me many pointless weekend emergencies.

like

Respectfully, you chose the wrong firm/practice area if this is the way it is for you

like

Agreed

Seriously, the default should be that it’s protected time unless there’s exceptional circumstances. We were recently told we should request weekends as well when we request time off if we want to ensure ppl know we’re out of pocket “for our benefit” 🙄🙄🙄

like

I get the immediate negative reaction to this but as someone assigning work it would be helpful to know who is out of pocket over the weekend before trying to staff an urgent project

Can we return to the middle where neither this situation nor the “I am dropping the ball until 9am Monday” is the norm. It seems as if part of the industry is living in entirely different realities at the moment.

OP, what year are you?

2015

I once took a few hours to respond to an email on a religious holiday that fell on a weekend. I apologized to the partner for the delay and explained that I had family visiting for the holiday. The partner asked me who was “covering” for me that day. The client was not even responding to the parter’s emails that day and the matter was not urgent. I responded “no one.”

I still do work for this person occasionally but I try to avoid it at all costs.

I had to move on short notice, so I took a lot of PTO over the last two weeks and am currently living out of boxes. Now I’m incredibly behind on work. I have three motions to draft in the next week, plus a bunch of discovery stuff for two other cases. I’m even going to have to ask opp counsel for an extension on an agreed deadline.

And yet… I have managed to complete 0 of the 22 items on my to do list today.

How many days of PTO do you take? I’m a second year partner and have struggled to step away for more than a couple of days at a time. I take around 15 days total for the year. This is a mentality carried over from being a senior manager and working constantly to sell and build a ledger to make partner. My team has doubled in size and ledger continues to grow. I fear burnout with pressure to keep pace of growth no additional incentive to work this hard because of equal sharing comp model.

Hello everyone!

While my boss is very sensitive to sexism, he often reminds me that I am only a 2nd year, and that sometimes people (attorneys in our firm, outside co-counsel, opposing counsel) treat me differently in accordance with my experience level, rather than because of my gender. I, however, believe that I’d be given a lot more respect as a male 2nd year. Small firm so we don’t have any male associates. How do I show him it’s my gender and not my experience level?
