Anyone else have a bad billing month?

I have never had a good billing month. this is a relatively bad one. I do all the work I'm given, and that is never enough. it's not going to other associates; it's just me in a niche group without a ton to do lately. performance reviews are always stellar.

would love to know if that means I'm first on chopping block or somewhat protected when the firm blows through its cash reserves.

Yep! About 20 under my goal - which is just to meet the 1850 number my firm established for bonuses. I'm about 30 hours under where I should be for our July-June fiscal year, and I'm starting to doubt my chances of making up the deficit.

like

It depends on how much credit I'm going to get for non billable Keeping Up With COVID-19 research, which no one will commit to. If those hours mean anything, I'm not worried. If they don't, I have <50% of target chargeable hours...

like

I was on pace to hit 2200 hours (our fy ends in October) and then billed like 72 hours in March. Right now, I'm just hoping not to get laid off.

like

Yup, I was ahead of our 1950 target but this month put me a little bit below pace. Ordinarily wouldn’t be worried about making up a 20-30 hour deficit but I’m an M&A lawyer so......April will be even worse I bet

I had an okay March (~10 hrs below monthly target) but feeling like April will be much slower. I billed 3.8 yesterday 😶

Yup - had a 135 hr month for March when I was averaging 175-180 a month before. A lot of that came from pro bono hours as well. We have a cap of 100 approved non-billable hours (pro bono, articles) that count toward our 2000 hr goal but I’m already at 65. 😭 April will be rough.

was on pace to hit about 1000 (excluding pro bono, of which I do more than can count toward a bonus, and various firm-helping crap that doesn't count for me toward a bonus because I get assigned too much of it). now I think I'm on pace to hit about 1000. so I guess the consistency is good?

I guess I am the anomaly. Hit 230 billables for March.

Yes. I’m an M&A associate and have seen a large drop in hours. I was very busy Dec-Jan and billed just over 300 each month. February dropped to 120 (I was told work was slowing down a bit in our group and partners were trying to even out workflow, so I’m not sure whether this drop was related to COVID-19). Billables in March dropped to 75. These numbers don’t include any nonbillable work that might count toward our bonuses.

Finance associate here. I didn't drop off until early March, but basically same pattern as you. Last month was like 70 and April is only looking slightly better. I'm volunteering for nonbillable COVID-related projects like crazy, and even that's not close to what I'd been billing. *sad face*

Lol, I had a month with 99 hours due to mandatory firm training. Hilariously, I ended up with 2200 that year. Don’t worry if it’s just a single month.

240 here in March. Crazy nonbillable stuff too. Not as clear on the pipeline, though.

I work for a few partners. While some partners tell me I’ve done a great job and make minor edits to my work product (i.e. organization of points, finessing certain arguments, etc.), one partner in particular tells me I’ve done a good job but rips apart my drafts, uses my foundation and redrafts the entire thing. Am I doing something wrong? I have reached out to the partner several times to find out if there’s any feedback I can use to improve my work, but I’m always told everything is fine :/

Law schools in Toronto - I am currently working as a Senior Auditor at EY & finished my CPA modules in less than 12 months & successfully passed CFE, September 2021 (Fasttrack) while working full time. I am really interested in getting into a top law school here in Toronto but unfortunately I had a low CGPA (3.15) from undergrad due to some unfortunate incident, mostly impacted my grades. I strongly feel i can score 170+ on LSAT; question DO I EVEN STAND A CHANCE TO GET INTO ANY LAW SCHOOL

M&A senior here. Most days I feel like I’ve peaked with a ceiling of midlevel and feel like I can’t break through to that next step to truly lead deals independently. I have done it but always some partner backstop even if not a ton. Is it weird to think that maybe my limit is midlevel ability? If that’s the case, not sure how I’ll ever move upward or get better at it.

My spouse has spent 4 yrs in major market biglaw. She has always been interested in public policy/government work and went to law school to do that work. After 2016 election, left DC and did corporate. Now she wants to go back and has had several interviews over the past 5 months with a major DC law firm/lobbying firm. Final round interview in Dec went really well. No response for a month, no response to follow up emails. Is this just holiday delay or should she consider this opp dead?
