International vs. PCS internal and Exit Opportunities. — I’m a S2 in ATL working in PCS and in international/crossborder for private clients. I need some guidance determining whether I would be better off staying in PCS or declaring a specialty in int’l/crossborder work. We’ve just had performance reviews, and it turns out that every junior/mid associate in my practice group (including me) that I have spoken to has individually been told that they’re performing above their level and that they are amazing etc. Is this normal / is this a retention tactic? A number of juniors are considering moving laterally, in case it adds any context, just seems weird to all be told the same thing when it can’t be true for everyone...

How do I become a faster writer? People like my writing skills and I am now getting asked to write substantive appellate and responsive briefs. The issue is that I’m struggling to meet deadlines. It takes me twenty minutes to write a single sentence. I spend too much time fixated on revising prose sentence by sentence, instead of just moving on and revising later.

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? Appraisal mid year this year, I’m on track to do 500+ hrs over target. I am also 500 hours ahead of the two people in my same year in my team (and have been consistently ahead for past 18 mos). Reviews so far have been really good. We had to take a 6 month 20% pay cut in 2020 for covid despite being big law and finance performing v well (cushioning profits I think). I want to ask for a raise as our salaries are already lower side of market - am I in good position to do so? What sort of %?

I worked across a deal from my ex-firm (left really amicably) with people from another office that I have never interacted with. From the beginning, the partner had always come off a bit rude but I chalked it off as people being stressed and overworked. Then something happened today which made me realize how unpleasant this partner is. Well I hope you are happy that you made life difficult for a junior who does not have much control over the deal flow. So glad I left!
