Anyone else here have major breastfeeding challenges? Baby isn’t patching correctly and losing weight so I’m pumping and using formula to supplement. Working with lacation consultant but still

I had issues with my newest son and it turned out he had a tongue and lip tie which was causing sucking issues. Remember FED is best, so don’t beat yourself up if breastfeeding isn’t working and you have to go straight to formula. Sending you lots of good vibes!

I did too! My baby had a lot of bottles in the beginning because he wouldn't latch correctly, painful for me he wasn't getting enough to eat. The most important thing is that the baby gets enough to eat. Don't let the LC pressure you too much or make you feel guilty about bottle feeding. You have time to continue/increase breastfeeding. This was so insanely stressful for me and the LC and pediatrician made me feel worse. I wish I hadn't been so hard on myself, I eased back into it and by 8 weeks or so I was back to exclusively breastfeeding.

I agree that fed is best. But I know several people who have had issues with lip or tongue tie. Not all hospitals check for it when baby is born but mine does and corrects it on site. Check out kellymom website. I used it a lot when I was still breastfeeding

Supplemented from day 4 after we were back in the hospital because baby had no wet diapers for over 24 hrs. I really tried breastfeeding, saw multiple LCs over the first month, but baby just wasn't getting enough from me, kept falling asleep at the breast no matter how I tried to keep her awake. Breastfeeding sessions were nearly an hour long, and I was pumping for at least 30min after, which meant I got NO break. After 4 weeks, stopped breastfeeding, just did pumping + formula. Got my supply to be about half what the baby needed, and maintained for nearly 6 months! It was a lot longer than I thought I could go for. Beeastfeeding was such a stressful, traumatizing experience for me and I don't know if I even want to try it at all for the second. But pumping and formula worked for me. Echo what others have said: as long as the baby is fed, don't worry about it!

I had a lot of difficult with latching and my little one was also very sleepy...we supplemented as my milk was delayed but then he loved the fast flow of bottles. Once my milk came in I pumped while husband bottle fed and then I used nipple shields for a while and eventually weaned him off the nipple shield after a month. It was rough, but glad I stuck with it!!

Struggling. Baby is 8 days old and very lethargic. Wondering if anyone has similar experiences ?

My first never latched. I pumped for about 8 weeks and then my supply tanked. Had struggles with my second, worked with an LC and was able to make it 6 months (even enjoyed the last few). Supplemented both of mine from day 3 or 7 (they were over 10 and 9 lbs respectively and hungry! Lol). I know that’s not really advice. Just remember everyone is different. You have resources and you have women to support you and who’ve been there. Fed is always best. Give things a try and figure out where you and baby are going to work together best. No matter what you do you have this!

Get checked for tongue/lip tie. We got it corrected at 2 weeks and I went from dreading every minute to making it a year plus. LCs and support groups help , but there are some great formulas too!

My first had minor tongue tie, but major latch issues. I really wanted to breastfeed and the LC I saw suggested a nippleshield (a piece of soft plastic that basically turns you into a bottle). Helped a bunch and we made it to 15months (I did supplement with formula too)

also switched lactation consultants and it made a huge difference!

I had problems as well. One of my twins had a tongue tie and the ENT advised against cutting it because he was premature. It turned out to be the right call because he never had an issue after he hit his due date. But in the month between he had to bottle feed, and even then it was messy and he dribbled a lot. I had a supply issue as well because I both had twins and couldn’t really ever get into a schedule with pumping. After about a month I just put them on formula and it was the happiest I was since I gave birth. Fed is best, and you’ve got to do what works best for you guys as a family (and that includes you, your stress, and your sanity!). Good luck momma

No advice because that feels like so long ago for me, but just wanted to say, breastfeeding is really freaking hard. Hang in there! There is some great advice in this thread...don't be hard on yourself because it isn't as magical and easy as some people make it seem.

My baby just got to 3 months so the initial nightmarish days of bf are still fresh in my mind. Here are some things I’d suggest: 1. DON’T beat yourself up about exclusive breastfeeding- it’s about making sure the baby isn’t hungry and supplements are just fine. There are supplementation schedules to make sure you don’t lose supply, and formulas designed for breastfed babies 2. LCs are biased towards bf at all costs (I’m bitter about my own experience here, admittedly). Introducing a bottle is not the end of the world. My baby had no issues switching back and forth from a bottle, and most babies don’t. The SNS is pure torture. I wish I’d not listened to the LC. 3. Beware of suggestions around clipping ties. The AAP released a committee review of the drastic increase in clipping infant tongue and lip ties in the 5 years and has found it has no impact on breastfeeding. Infants naturally perfect their latch over the first few weeks- meanwhile practice a good latch. It’s worth the time investment. If you’re advised of a potential tongue or lip tie, get second and third opinions. Women have been bf’ing for centuries without clipping their infant’s frenulum. 4. It gets better. Much much much better. Hugs to you mama, be kind to yourself and use your consulting skills to evaluate both sides of the argument and make an informed decision

Good point about the tongue tie. Honestly almost every baby I know born in the past 2 years seems to have had some tongue tie issue, which I didn't even know was thing until My LC suggested my son had one, but my pediatrician said no way it was severe enough to cause a problem. I know the previous generation didn't breastfeed as much, but this tongue tie thing seems rampant!

Currently a few weeks left on parental leave and have had a potential opportunity come up with a smaller firm that I think makes more sense for my career goals. The question I have is: assuming I get an offer and the details work out, how do I navigate leaving? Should I provide notice right away? Go back to my current firm for a couple weeks and then give notice? I certainly don’t want to burn bridges. How would you feel on the other side?

Hi fam! Me and my partner (females) just got an oral consent from my partners best friend (gay male) to be a sperm donor. Anyone has experience with this? I know lesbians usually go to sperm bank but we wanted to know “baby daddy” and have him involved as a godparent and when kids ask questions introduce him as a father. Personal life stories and dos and donts welcome. All my friends are straight or gay men so I have this resource and general internet.

I have this problem that I picked up from my father growing up: can’t effectively communicate negative feelings to people that I’m close with. I sort of expect them to know, and when they don’t get it or don’t show efforts that I’m expecting to receive, I start to distance myself from them and shut down. I started to reflect back on why I do this, and sense that this is some kind of a sick way of showing I have more power over the other person. How can I fix this?
