Welcome to the communist state of IL 😬😬😬
Email the multi-state tax team. They’ll write a response for you and reimburse you for what you owe.
I didn’t have EY do my taxes
Yes, Illinois double taxes. You do not get an “other state taxes” credit in Illinois if your firm has an office in Illinois. This has been well litigated and the taxpayers lost.
I’ve not gotten that letter in 4 years of living here... damn... did you work in a no-income-tax state in 2018?
No, I didn’t. The state I worked in before 2018 has a reciprocal agreement with IL and therefore did not collect state tax. The one I worked in last year does not have that agreement, so IL wants the tax the other state collected.
Yeah, that’s a new law. Illinois is the only state in the country that taxes on global income. Thank your fellow Illinoisans for keeping the Dems in power
Just got my third letter in three years. Submitting my request for reimbursement again tomorrow 😒
Another reason to leave IL
For folks that are getting these letters, are your IL wages on your W-2 your entire income, or just a portion of your wages? For example if your total income was $100k and you worked in NY for 6 months, does your IL portion of your W-2 have $100k in wages or $50k?
It has the income earned in IL and income earned in the state that has no reciprocation agreement with IL. When I worked in a state that did have a reciprocation agreement with IL, all of my wages were reported in IL on my W2.
Idk if it’s the same but IL underpaid my refund by $1400 because of that reason (or I think it’s the same, can’t really make sense out of this tax language)
Illinois has a law (as unconstitutional as it sounds) that if your base of operations is in Illinois, you need to allocate 100% of your income to Illinois in addition to taxes paid to other states. Your employer should gross you up to make you whole for Illinois automatically, however if they don’t you should talk to someone in payroll or your practice’s partner. Supreme Court has found a similar practice unconstitutional in other states, not sure why Illinois was excluded. http://taxexecutive.org/supreme-court-rules-maryland-personal-income-tax-unconstitutional-in-wynne/
