Job market seems slow anyways. But I also don’t know what I want to do anymore. Being in consulting for 2 years and not doing work in my field that I focused on in college has made me ineligible to move back into that unless I take a major paycut (which I can’t afford to do with loans and other bills). I don’t know if I truly enjoy what I have been focusing on in consulting to do that full time in industry. Like is it more important to like what you do or be good at something so that you can reap the promotional benefits? I don’t even know anymore so it makes job hunting quite difficult.
Everything else in my life seems to be going well but because work takes up so much of my life and I feel this discombobulated about it, I feel so lost and anxious about my future. I hate this.
Just ranting on a Wednesday morning. Don’t know who to talk to since this doesn’t seem like something to share with my career counselor and my friends/family are probably tired of hearing it.
Same boat plus personal life isn’t good either lol
Some thoughts -
You need both skill and will to be successful in a career.
I’ve seen many people become motivated in their existing jobs after they skill up enough to see the value they are creating for themselves and/or others.
I’ve seen many people develop skills in completely new areas when they are passionate and put in the work.
I would spend some time to reflect on your relative priorities in life (eg career progression vs financial security, location, family, friends, hobbies, etc). Then, if you can’t see yourself having a future on your current path, a step back (or pivot to something completely different) could be the best long term move even if it is a short term financial hit.
Masters degree can be a good out if you don’t have one already
I think Accenture’s training model killed my drive. I have tried to skill up numerous ways in a variety of areas. However, that doesn’t ensure you get staffed on a project utilizing that skillset/most managers don’t want to give someone at my level a chance. My biggest priority is financial security at this moment (because of the grad school loans and just feeling the need to be stable) which is why I unfortunately feel like I have to stay because we pay so well. However, this job is killing me because I don’t feel like I’m learning, I don’t feel like I’m valued, and I don’t feel like I am contributing amazing work.
OP, you have to pick your poison and pick what struggles and challenges you want to face.
OP keep your chin up. If it makes you feel better, I am dealing with the same thing... I am not a great consultant nor do I enjoy the work and I think it shows with my team. It is really hard to stomach a pay cut for me, but better now then in a few years. Honestly, PwC was a bad decision for me in the beginning. I took the job thinking it could help me in the future and I was very, very wrong.
OP - you can always just quit if you are really miserable. Trust me, it’s not going to ruin your career and it won’t require an explanation with future employers. Especially if it’s your first job
Remember you are in control amd you have the power of choice. You can stay and make the best of it, or find something else. You will be ok. Whatever you do, don't sit still and be miserable. You either take control or you will be controled. Be in action and you will feel better.
You’re absolutely right. I’m trying to mentally better myself so every day doesn’t seem bad while in the meantime I try to find the right projects/exit opps.
Also, there are going to be companies that pay more, so keep searching
True but at a higher level, which means staying here longer.
What's your area of study and are you sure it pays really low?
Yes very sure. It’s one reason I didn’t go into it out of college.
Just sounds like the adult life.
I was in the same boat. Trust me, you can find work out there. Even a minor pay decrease is worth it
I’m trying my best. Just has to be the right opportunity.
