Anyone else seriously exhausted by the holiday season? With work, cleaning & decorating, making travel plans and shopping for presents I just feel run down and tired and we're not even close to Christmas yet. My husband tries his best but I feel like so much of the holiday season falls on women's shoulders to handle. Am I wrong?

You're 100% right. This is my first holiday without my mother around and I'm only now understanding how much she did both working at the hospital and arranging family holiday plans. I wish I had known and could have helped her while she was here 😭

Yes I am exhausted. It feels like I will literally never catch up on rest. I have so much shopping to do and I can't seem to make it happen with everything else going on.

You’re right. I’m beyond exhausted by this time of year. My busy season at work starts this month and goes through May. But the last few years I’ve stayed busy the entire year so by end of the year, I’m just burned out. Holiday season just makes me more frustrated bc I’m too tired to devote the focus and attention that my family deserves. I try to stay focused on “what’s going on” one day at a time. Thinking further beyond that and I’m overwhelmed.

like

You are not the only one feeling swamped by the holidays. I feel like there are countless things I need to spend money on in order to fully feel the spirit of the holidays. You're not wrong there though sister.

like

Your correct! It’s all on us women an we handle it so well!

We divide and conquer. I cant do it all. My husband has been a tremendous help this year knowing i am back to work this year. I would still say though its still 60/40 but that is significant for him!

like

Pass some of it on to your hubby or just decide what really doesn’t “have to be done.” And for the love of all things sane and insane, please choose to “let it go” if it’s not perfect. I think most of us in healthcare and/or with advanced degrees are challenged with doing it all because we want things done a certain way. If the job is done (or mostly done or done-enough) let.it.go and enjoy your life!

Happiest of Holidays to all of my healthcare colleagues out there sharing the fishbowl!!

You are 100% correct about that. There is no rhyme or reason to it, it's just like that. But I can't seem to accept that. It's a bummer really but much is expected of us

You're definitely right. My husband know how much I'm stressed out and told me that I don't have to shoulder every responsibility. I did have him do the decorating but I of course with very very detailed instructions.

It would be better if you talk it out with your husband. You can divide the stuff that you wan to do on this season so you will not be overwhelmed with so many things.

Yes, it's usually the women who take the lead. My husband is helping a little but still the majority falls on me.

It is a-ok to say no during the holidays. If you feel overwhelmed, write down everything you think you need to do.

Then sit down and start crossing things off.

This whole have to do all this holy crap, has to stop. And it stops when us women who carry the brunt of the holiday tasks, say no.

And if someone complains, then you say if you want it, you do it.

My husband and I are busy professionals with two kids. We have very low key holidays on purpose. We need rest from our busy year. We only buy gifts for our children, none for cousins, aunts ,uncles etc. We barely get out a Christmas card. We put up a tree and I did manage outside Christmas lights.

Because we both say no during the holidays. And we back each other up.

So I'm going to encourage you to make a list and say no to the things that bring you extra stress.

My first holiday season sober. This is really hard. Don't like having to turn down invites to events I know I would be tempted to have a drink at. Having to tell people not to gift me nice bottles (something I loved for years) because I'm sober, the whole thing honestly just makes me feel lonely and frustrated. Don't relish having to explain it to family at Christmas either. This sucks!

Is there an average number of billable hours for first year associates? I’m about 2 months into clerking and get barred in about 2 weeks and the firm I’m at has me set at a fairly high billable minimum. I haven’t hit it yet and I’m getting nervous because I’m starting month 3 and gonna try to hit it so I don’t start facing possible adverse affects (losing vacation days, getting bumped from salaries to hourly, etc.). It’s a very small firm...

Recently joined a project that’s been in flight for long time. Onboarding hasn’t been great, not sure who my Point of contact is, where we are in the process (since they started such a long time ago and the SoW is outdated by at least 2 years), what the objectives are for this phase of work. Manager sort of just says things that suggests I should know, which deters me from asking Qs. They recently came across as a bit annoyed when I’d ask a few Qs. Not sure if they fee the onboarding decks…tbc

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!

I have ADHD and executive dysfunction, resulting in horrid eating habits my whole life. My body just doesn’t tell me it is hungry and pre-pregnancy, I could go days without eating. My husband is the same way. I am panicked about staying on top of baby feedings and noticing patterns. The Pocket Nanny tracker where you press the button of the feed, diaper change, etc, seems to be popular but doesn’t log it anywhere. Has anyone heard of these and have a recommendation for one that logs as well?

A senior manager sent me a text today to ask if I had sent an email last week, and if not, they would send it right now. I am on PTO today. Am I wrong to feel that was not appropriate? Why couldn’t that have waited. Is it not an acceptable boundary to expect to be left alone when on PTO? How do I properly communicate that to a level above without it coming across badly?
