I think we’ll get there (Roblox and Fortnite are already a part of this shift; we on this forum just don’t know much because we’re older) but it won’t be as mainstream as everyone is saying, given the real human need for physical connection. But it’ll still drive a meaningful share of how people engage in the distant future, I’m sure.
With that said, I also believe that it’s heavily contingent on AR/VR hardware becoming streamlined and seamless. The metaverse is not as appealing to the masses without that.
Matthew Ball has some great pieces on this from a few years ago.
Like everything new, I think what the “meta verse” will become is something no one can predict right now - including the companies trying to build it up.
Until hardware becomes far less intrusive and more integrated with regular life (like AR embedded in regular glasses) it probably isn’t going to be a big part of life.
With all new tech I’ve had to learn not to underestimate how stupid something sounds at first. I’ve usually been VERY wrong about how important it becomes. Someone will find a use for it, and there’s a good chance that eventually some meta verse tech will become incredibly popular
totally agree, it was a PR stunt because people are starting to see how much facebook sucks

This is exactly right. Facebook had trouble attracting talent because it’s so bad for their resume that FB rebranded

I think we will get there. If you understand that what drives the world is not what is optimal but - someone will do it anyway so I should do it first mentality - you can see that companies will compete to get there first which will naturally drive the world in that direction. Business, society, geopolitics all operate this way
Rebadged VR + SecondLife. VR Chat has been around for 5 years now and no one cared. Even gamers never really fully embraced it so how are you gonna expect normies to want in on this.

I really only see it as some kind of Sims crossover with that weird Bruce Willis movie Surrogates from 2009. I really don’t see the practical application for consistent use in real life.
Who wants to live in a world that Zuck creates? No thanks.
Yep. In my opinion, VR/AR will have a limited role to play in our everyday lives, but not nearly to the extent it's being played up
I think you're seeing such an explosive reaction to it since companies don't want to look like they're behind on the next big thing. Most of us said NFTs and crypto were dumb and they blew up, and people don't want to look like they're going to miss yet another big perceived digital innovation
Completely agree about Mark Zuckerberg. He is a lucky guy who came up with a cool idea at the right time ( my bad stole a good idea ). He is exaggerating the role Facebook plays in society. Additionally, due to recent scandals there is a lot of distrust towards the platform. I highly doubt they will become the company to build the Metaverse. I at least would never enter into any type of warped reality that company creates. I don’t understand why Mark thinks he had the credibility to lead this but let him go ahead and try .
Habbo hotel anyone?

Are we all gonna be running around in the Metaverse trashing each other’s rooms and keylogging each other then?

Too much sexual assault. Will people go to court in the meta verse for crimes committed in the meta verse?
Metaverse is not a place. It’s a time when we tip over to use more of the digital world than the physical. It’s going to happen. People were not believers of the internet in 1994 either.
Metaverse!=Meta 🤦🏾♀️ there will be many metaverse ecosystems and yes it is coming whether we like it or not .
Dang this is an awesome visual! Nice share SD1.
May I ask where you got it? May be some other helpful information that I would love to explore

Just like the scam that cryptocurrencies and NFTs are, the “metaverse” is another solution in search of a problem. It is symbolic of the technological stagnation we’re experiencing.
Whereas in the last century we went from horse and buggy to walking on the moon, you will see that the innovations of this century will pale in comparison. Our best and brightest people are lured in by high salaries at companies like Meta while the very basic infrastructure in our real world is crumbling all around us especially in the US, bridges collapsing etc.
Thiel said it best when we’re so focused on the world of bits that we neglect the world of atoms.
Unless we’re interacting with realistic looking avatars, I’m not interested in interacting with colleagues this way. It’s like me trying to take anyone who uses Animojis seriously.
However, I do think interacting and doing things in a metaverse is pretty cool. Once they get the point of making things look a little more realistic, things like shopping for clothes or house hunting could take advantage of the form factor.

I think Ready Player One taught us this a terrible idea and will only lead to death and destruction if we abandon to real world for a virtual version of it

I think it will be a thing 100 years from now but version 1 is going to be an upgraded second life. In 100 years we’ll have neural implants that load us in and won’t have to look at two little screens. It will be much more seamless and enable more realistic gathering/work/senses.
A fad just like the internet

Google the “Last Man Philosophy” - that’s where humanity is at. All consumption no more exploration. I think metaverse will become larger especially for people who can’t afford to do the cool things in real life that we can do

Another 3D-type fad. Any time you have something that COULD cause physical discomfort, is a recipe for failure.
