I had it from age 18-23 and it was so bad I ended up getting an endoscopy at age 19 and was prescribed 40mg of omeprazole daily, and ranitidine, which I took until age 23, when I fixed it on my own... The problem is doctors do not treat root causes — just symptoms. “Oh you’re just pre-disposed to GERD because of family history. Here, take these drugs for forever!” Fixed it by eliminating grains, sugar, and starchy carbs (keto) and I was also able to cut out all the drugs. It will sometimes flare up if I’m stressed or drink a lot, but otherwise it’s gone. Actually, a lot of GERD is caused by too LOW stomach acid (hypochloridia). If your doctor isn’t testing for that by measuring the pH of your stomach, fire them.

Yes! Was on prescription heart burn meds and didn’t work. Went to insanely bland foods, drinking ginger tea at night still didn’t totally help. Shockingly a probiotic solved it. Additionally, I was wearing a night bite guard and realized that’s part of the issue. Think the night guard was holding some bacteria or something ... The probiotic and no guard had helped. It absolutely 1000000% sucks. It’s debilitating. Affects your mental health and mood big time. Sending good vibes

Cut out alcohol, coffee, and tomatoes. That reduced my excruciating pain...I don’t follow a strict GERD diet because I love food too much but I realized these three things were my biggest triggers

C1 is spot on. These things worked for me as well, and avoiding Orange Juice.
All of the above and get a slanted pillow. I also recently got my gut biome tested through viome. That was a life changer. Found out tomatoes and salmon caused an inflammatory response. Also told me what bacteria my stomach was missing. I got on the recommended probiotics and I’ve been great ever since

What is the biome test? I’ve been very keen to get a test to inform me of inflammatory foods. I noticed I get a bit of rosacea when I get heart burn and my joints hurt at times too. I’d like to identify all the possible stimulants that cause these issues.

I’m on omeprazole and that worked for me. IBGuard, which is essentially peppermint oil was also effective. You should look into getting a GERD pillow
I believe Omeprazole causes dementia in the long run.
Lay on your left side when you get a flare up! And my doctor told me I can take 2 Pepcid Complete (the directions say one). But check with your Dr first.
Pepcid over time messes with bone density so definitely check that out and be careful.

No afternoon coffee, dropping my BMI a few points away from 30.

Omeprazole is not recommended for long term. I heard it has long term side effects. Try Gaviscon Advance. Get a pillow cushion that lets your upper body tilt upward while resting. Also do not eat for 3-4 hours before you go to bed. Avoid fatty food soda spicy food salt tomato and coconut.

Remove all the irritants in your diet mentioned in the above posts. Add: Whole milk homemade yogurt. 1 cup with every meal till forever.

Yes, this 💯 works. I definitely ate a yogurt life for the first year or so 🙃 I still turn to Greek yogurt whenever I have a flare up
My wife had horrible reflux and over the past few months she cut out caffeine, gluten, and alcohol (Monday through Thursday). She hasn’t had to take omeprazole since.

Yes this is me too! Have had GERD for 10 years since my early 20s. I’ve found in the past 5 years I can drink 1-2 cold brews with no problem - must have nut milk though. Also have continued to cut out all citrus foods, heavy dairy and gluten foods. Which is easy, cuz I’m allergic anyways. I can only manage 1-2 drinks 2x a week though. But haven’t taken any tums or meds in over 5 years 😅

Diet change paleo.
Drink lots of fluids (water) i noticed ive been drinking less with Covid, especially on weekends. The reflux only comes during weekends for me, where i eat a lot, but drink little fluids.
I think I have this (planning on going to doctor, but delayed due to Covid...). It seems that when I eat too quickly I get this. Horrible. And normally requires me regurgitating... and then feel almost instantly better.

Eat slower and smaller amounts
I’ve had chronic GERD for almost 10 years and prevacid (lansoprazole) has been a lifesaver. Also propping up at night with a lot of pillows, not eating late at night and spearmint mints/gum are a must have (peppermint is too harsh for my stomach). Also keep bland foods on hand like saltines, pretzels, etc. for flare ups or bad days.
Matcha instead of coffee if I need caffeine, went to high protein/ low carb diet.

As a long-time gerd sufferer who got it under control, I can say it really depends on your individual situation. OP, what is your diet like now and what have you already tried?

Smaller meals, especially dinner Respecting the no eating 3 hours before bed rule Switched to almond milk

Is GERD also when you have a sore/itchy/tingly throat for months ?
Pro
Yep.
Have GERD for over 15 yrs; took some trial and error to settle down to a regime but here is what works for me: OTC Prevacid and probiotics, eat only between noon and 7PM; lots of water, no caffeine after 3 PM. I still regularly enjoy my single malt and for that the 7 PM limit doesnot apply. Flare ups not more than twice a year and when it happens limit to Greek yogurt. No medical or scientific basis but as I said this regime works for me
Lose weight. No gluten, diary. No eating within 4 hours is bedtime. What everyone else said about acidic foods. Mine completely went away.
