Anyone else think about how lit working at big 4 would be before Enron. Those dudes just had to mess it up for everyone.

I was at a B6 in tax before Enron. Paper 14/21 column, 10 key tape and “work stations” you had to wait for to key in returns. Oh, and 100 hour weeks. Maybe a NRL once in a blue moon, but I do not miss those days. Lotus was an improvement.

I was in Public Accounting long before Enron and SOX. Yes, the procedures we did were different, but there were still crazy busy seasons and long hours in audit and tax. Even then, we had unreasonable time and budget constraints. The three martini lunch and golf every Friday days are long before your current partners were out of school. Those were before the 80s, when I started. It is not more difficult or less difficult to be in audit now - other than the PCAOB.

Ah, the NRL. So 1990’s 🤣

I was really hoping to hear some fun stories, but instead got paper spreadsheets. Yet another disappointment from the big 4

Good to know that there is a broader demographic using FB but just maybe not posting threads. Most threads seem to be written by staff and seniors with a sprinkling of managers complaining about how much they hate PA, asking salary questions or seeking exit ops.

I have a work paper that is hand ticked and ties in a file still. Rolled forward for like 15 years and recompressed enough it’s now nearly impossible to actually read.

I was in tax, not audit, but pre-Enron was like the Wild West, even in tax. I watched some of the most senior partners we had push tax shelters that even I knew were on the sketchy side of the grey zone. But 90’s were all about taking risks and pushing limits. Then Enron, then SOX, then those same partners went to jail (literally) and the firm disavowed any knowledge of what they had been doing. Despite being senior partners and SMEs to the SMEs. Fun times.

My boyfriends parents both worked at Andersen around that time haha. His mom told me she was asked to shred documents and that was when she jumped ship

Ha yes absolutely! All it takes is one subpoena for someone to learn the hard way. And unfortunately they happen often. I just read one the other day requesting every single email 10 individuals had sent over a 5-year period. I personally have had my computer confiscated and searched in connection with litigation (I was indirectly involved - I just was on the receiving end of an email). I know email is a bit different, but it’s easy to forget what’s on your computer and in your email till it’s too late!

My dad was there then, no control testing

Right so no controls reliance so testing thousands of transactions. And no reliance on systems so footing every single schedule you got - including the AR sub ledger. And as I mention above, that was done with a 10 key, not excel.

I know we all love the work from home (or do we?) but does anyone actually miss traveling for their consulting engagements and all the fun that goes along with it? The late nights at the office then the bar and random hookups and excitement and all that? Sure it’s a grind but I think I actually miss it too. Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.
