You can have nuance within the term racist. You just don't like the term specifically because of your own associations.
Not all racism is purposeful. Not all of it is mean spirited. All of it benefits white people structurally.
I don't use the word racist when I mean white supremacy specifically. But folks get up in arms about that too.
A lot of racism and sexism isn't malacious intent, but needs to be called out so people become aware of it. Problem is they take it as being accused of KKK-like hatred vice unintentional subconscious bias
I would flip the logic: people aren't getting mad about basic stuff. Instead, people are loosely using words that are charged with a lot of meaning and context
@A2 we identify it and make it socially unacceptable to remain ignorant within our circles. We advise about voting. We encourage Civic participation and volunteering to fill just a small few of the gaps in civil liberties that we encounter
Folks like A3 are why I'm never succinct. I'm out here doing backflips around words because folks like you are convinced that once a specific word is used, all credibility is out. Bored.
Prejudice isn't just racism lite. Using it as such is kind of an absurd suggestion. "Folks don't like this word. Use a softer one with a completely different definition than what you mean"
"All lives matter" is still a racist response to BLM in a lot of cases. it's just not violent the way your second example is.
@PWC2 there are plenty of valid critiques of BLM, I'm only suggesting that the reason folks feel the need to respond with All Lives Matter is because they're uncomfortable acknowledging the fact that black people are targeted at a disproportionate rate by police, and that the issue is structural (instead of the racist assumption that it's a behavioral issue)
Nothing is ""protected"". Never suggested that.
Yeah folks stay mad at being called on basic shit, it's annoying! It could be really chill if they weren't so uptight about the suggestion of structural oppression. Like. It's a thing. Let's all collectively get over ourselves
@pcload ehn. I just think people take it personally. What makes a word loaded? What makes people imply an extra layer of insult where there is none. Calling behavior racist is saying "this aligns to a structural imbalance". That's as impersonal as it gets
A3 so why are people so offended when they get called racist?
We may have also lost the ability to convey nuance. It feels like we are at the point where we're using "racist" for both All Lives Matter and the guy burning a cross on someone's lawn for buying a house in the wrong neighborhood. (Not condoning either one). What ever happened to "prejudiced"??
By the way these aren't the only words being over used: I'm a veteran (22 years, 2 deployments) and not everyone who served is a "Hero". Not even everyone KIA. Again, nuance is a good thing.
"Tyranny is the deliberate removal of nuance"
@Pwc2, what you may be picking up on is a millennial tendency to ask for explicit acknowledgment of certain things. It comes off as black and white because we're not accepting the "it depends" answer as much. We understand things aren't black and white. But we also want folks to start defining ranges for those grey areas.
You can't change things I'd people refuse to admit specific problems
*if people refuse
Just sayin, this is a constructive discussion. More like it could solve a lot of problems.
Ruddy, I think you'd find I agree with you on most subjects (and generally support BLM). I just don't agree that it should be protected to the point where anyone who questions is a "racist". Just like I don't think anyone who criticizes Israeli policies is an anti-Semite. But I respect your right to hold either of those view.
Because they realize the total bullshit and shallow crap underneath it - such a lazy go-to insult when you have no facts
Sorry, A2, that's not really one of them. LOL. Gotta troll harder than that 😂
And what do we do about structural oppression?
But that's my point, people perceive these words to hold too much meaning and context when it's actually so basic
