Anyone else who feels that they want to step into the more analytical/executive/operational/financial side of business?

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?

I feel you. In my practice, I get down in the weeds with clients and am pretty integral in structuring their deal, which effectively means, I'm the one putting their project together.

The part that gets me is that once the deal is papered, I disappear and the project I put together and then they go off and do the project. Sometimes I wish that I was able to remain more attached to the project. But on the other hand, part of me very much enjoys the volume of clients that I'm able to assist, whereas if I were in-house, I would just have those several projects.

i.e., not e.g., but agree with the sentiment generally. Depends on how many YOE, your scope of knowledge and whether clients could use you in the role.

Move in house. My job leans a lot more exec/operational no. Financial too, but those numbers really put me to sleep. Lawyers have been known to transition from legal roles to business roles once they’re in house.

You can definitely do it. I know multiple former biglawyers who went in-house and then transitioned to more and more biz heavy roles or just went straight to biz roles. You’re learning the industry not just the law.

What’s your year level, though? I feel like I get to input on biz decisions a lot really (decade out from school) and see the same in the most successful partners I work for. I’m in finance and all legal calls are at some level a credit call. Also we understand client business and what they’re really concerned about better than the clients sometimes (less sophisticated and/or less experienced clients) and it’s really a full service consultation we’re providing. E.g., when you say things like “I see my other lender clients are doing XYZ and that may be a way to address this issue you’re having”, that’s really about industry and market understanding, not a straight up legal issue.

As you move up the food chain this is essentially the kind of advice you will be giving eventually, but understand wanting to shortcut it

Recently interviewed with another company as a Vendor Mgmt partner. Individual contributor, high visible position with potential. Thoughts?

I would love to move to Asia one day. Currently working in corporate finance in the US, I just started out of college. What would be the best ways to jump ship and find a job there? Which countries might be best for long-term consideration? How does working there differ (besides the hours and hierarchies)? For those who have done it before, was it worth it? At what point in your career would it be best to make a move like this (or not to make a move like this)? Thanks!

Right now it’s 50/50 but I’m told going forward it will be split basically in thirds. My base is fairly low but I’m a 1st-year and need more experience - sort of a tough position to be in (though happy & grateful to still be employed). Thoughts? Should I jump ship, if possible? Hey all - first year associate here… I’ve met my hours requirement for this year (requirement is 1900 and am currently at around 2050 with billable hours - approx. 2160 with non billable admin hours) and I am just tired. Is it okay to just “disappear” during the holidays (thanksgiving week, week of Christmas) and let partners and senior associates know I am not available? At this point I don’t care about making more money - I just want to sleep, read a good trashy book, and cuddle with my dog.
