Anyone else with the U.S was more of a collectivist society than an individualistic one? I feel like we place so much value on individual success that a lot of people are left behind when that doesn't have to be the case

We’ll be taking 100% of your income and distributing it to someone who “needs it more”. By the way, only a select group of people gets to decide who “needs it more”. Get why this isn’t a good idea?

I agree. Scandinavian countries seem to have it figured out. I understand that these countries are much smaller and homogenous, but I wish we had similar policies like healthcare, maternity/paternity leave, a criminal justice system that focused on rehabilitation instead of punishment, and education

This idea has been tried. Communism and Marxism failed.

What you are looking for, without communism, is called Europe

like

Young countries usually start out hungry and ready to conquer everything so they grow at the fast speed. As they grow and quality of life improves, they become complacent and conservative to defend what they have already gained. Then the downfall comes. Europe used to be the strongest empires in the history.

You either move forward or you fall behind.

Caring for others doesn’t need to equate to communism or fascism. Yes I think the US has overindexed too far on individualism. The idea if you only work hard enough your will get ahead- is a joke. Where you were born is more likely to dictate your future than anything else. The South in particular has little to no economic mobility. You know what else was here? Slave plantations, confederacy, jim crow laws etc. And now thanks to the love for individualism Covid is out of control and ppl can just choose to not wear masks bc hey- it’s my God given right to get sick and get others sick if I want. Oh wait, If I don’t want to get a vaccine I don’t have to bc we all know vaccines are a hoax trying to control people, cause autism and again it’s my body my choice. Anyone who doesn’t see that there are negative consequences of pure individualism was likely born into a place of privilege. Not everything is black and white, we can have freedom and reward hard work, but we can’t leave everyone else behind and not give a damn just bc it doesn’t affect us day to day.

I came from there. No.

Rugged individualism is what makes America the place it is. Certainly it makes lockdowns harder to sell but it also makes Fascism and Communism harder to sell as well.

There are competitive advantages to nationalism. Many countries who have received defective PPE and/or none at all have woken up to the reality that you can't outsource things vital to national interests/security and expect other nations to put your citizens ahead of theirs in a crisis.

You don't wanna go down that path

Completely agree
We can learn from the British who toil day and night to pay for and increase riches or their royalty when British royalty already own more land than the king of Saudi or like the kings of Denmark, Spain etc where the people cheer when they pretend to work a real job - like for a day or two; or from China or Russia where over a billion toil so the children of communist party members can study abroad and race around in Lamborghinis

If you want to be more collectivist feel free to do so. No one is stopping you. Volunteer, donate, pay more taxes, etc. Forcing others to be collectivist is masqueraded fascism.

Assuming you meant wish instead of with. If this is the case, then yes.

like

Yes, I think we could dial it back about 10%.

like

Yes I do wish this! If people even considered a collective "we" there would not be as huge of an uproar of people screaming they personally don't want to wear a mask without regard for society as a whole.

Same thing goes for healthcare. It wouldn't take a global pandemic for some to realize your health is only as good as the least insured of Americans. Those that are uninsured or under insured will not get tests or treatment, will continue to work essential jobs because they can't afford not to, and will spread the virus to others
