Anyone else’s billables pathetic this month despite the fact that we’re in our 5th week of January? 🤣

For the new associates, don’t stress about a month or two of low time. It’ll come back (and if it doesn’t, try and asses why, if you’re the only slow one, you are likely doing bad work and getting punished for it, ask how you can improve). I billed 2600 last year and this month I’ll probably hit 165 (+-5 hours) and could not care less. Unless you’re in a sweatshop with monthly requirements (and if you are, leave if you can, that’s insane), the final number is all that matters.

Depends on your practice area. M&A is crazy busy in November and December (gotta get all those deals done before financial year end!), and January is often dead, dead, dead. Things start picking up again on February, before the end of the first quarter. I’ve only had one January that was crazy busy because all my closings slipped from December 31 to January. My January has been pretty dead so far too, but the deals have started rolling in, so I know those hours are coming. Try to take advantage of the calm before the storm!

Hopefully will break 100. Been very slow. Just now starting to pick up

Gunners gotta gun, apparently. 😐

likefunny

Not a gunner. Didn’t get a choice. Everyone is super busy in my group.

I’m on track to bill 220. Only been with the firm a few months. I was told January is usually pretty slow. So if this is any indication of how the rest of my year will go, it was nice knowing y’all

999.3 in January after I spent the first two weeks on an African safari.

I don’t believe the .3 – you’ve gotta be billing by the quarter hour if you’re hitting the thousands per month 😂

New associate, started October. I've billed maybe 60 hours this month despite consistently asking for work

like

Enjoy the slowness!! I’ve been at 175-180 since July last year. October was 205. January was 135 and I thought I was slow; I’ve learned to enjoy it. Make sure everything is completed on your end prior to asking for more work.

Damn how much do you guys work.... 40/week is good for me lol

like

I barely cracked 100 total. Have like 35 hours in client billables and some pro bono.

like

I took 4 days off, but I’m at 220 with another long 2 days ahead😭 Trade places?

This started with “how low are you?” And became “how high have you gotten?”

likefunny

Lol! This was not my intention. I wanted some solidarity re: sub 100 hours

like

I billed 30 minutes today.

To everyone that replied to this post saying they are on track to bill 20000 hours etc.: are you incapable of reading the post and actually understanding the question it poses? Why the hell would you respond?! Literally no one cares if you’re billing as much as you’re expected to. We only care about those who aren’t.

likeupliftingfunny

I replied because the hashtag was relatable. Even though my hours aren’t low, my morale still is. If this is what a slow month looks like at my firm, I’m terrified to see what the rest of the year will bring. I didn’t think one comment would turn the whole thread into everyone throwing up their billables for the month.

140 or so as of today, but was on my honeymoon until the 5th.

Yep.

Glad I’m not the only one... morale is real low

Billables are pathetic as you sit vigil watching a parent die. We live in a matrix of self perception and societal perception and images we help to uphold that breaks down to raw vulnerability when faced with death and our own mortality.

likefunny

Yes my mother passed away Friday. Officially I’m an orphan. You clear the decks. You realize nothing you do is vital. It is a reminder that what we erect is all a matrix of perception. And it falls apart wuickly

87 and minimum req is 160. And had annual reviews last week and was chastised for not making my hours in November and December. Monthly minimums are ridiculous when there’s also an annual minimum - isn’t all well that ends well? Why the monthly tally?

like

165 so far (Tuesday 28th) which may be pathetic for some but I’ll wind up with at least 185 which is pretty above my firm’s target.

like

Maybe 100?

like

Definitely not in real estate.

I was super low last January and remembered being worried like you. Asking for work may not always result in work but it does make those who you ask work from remember that you’re proactive. That will help out when it comes down to your review at the end of the year. You’re doing the right thing, keep going!

How do you litigators do it? I’m a transactional attorney caught in the middle of a client’s litigation issues and this sucks. Some of these litigators’ bills seem extreme for no actual trial occurring. I’ve never been so pleased with my chosen path.

Was hired into a company at a level that was more junior than my skills (Was out of work due to pandemic for a year). I’ve been at the company 5 months. We’re going through a reorg and my new position will really be leveraging my years of experience more so than other role. Is it appropriate to discuss a raise/adding senior to title? Or should I do the job and then prove myself then talk about raise. I have more experience than the senior members of my team.
