Sweet humblebrag on having a holiday party

Yep

Man I thought firms were done with that after suffering from the G.R. for a couple years. Apparently cost-savings really stick

Yeah our summer associate program has basically been gutted in the last couple of years.

Some larger banks started cancelling their holiday partys all together and just offer individual holiday allowances for dinner and drinks instead. Allegedly in the $30-60 range - in NY. Not sure if that’s better or worse than in the conference room though.

Interesting! I think I’d prefer that actually. Pool together the allowances and hang out with coworkers you actually want to hang out with. Instead of having awkward “so what are you working on?” convos.

The cutback on fun “company culture” events from when I was an intern until now genuinely makes me consider quitting

Yup. The corporate bean counters are taking over. This is happening in every aspect of our practice.

Hello folks,

I am new to fishbowl and recently got an offer from Publicis Sapient for a senior associate. They are offering $136k with unlimited pto benefits. As I am from the industry and haven't heard about this company before, I would like some comments or thoughts about working for this company? How do they invest in their employees (like pay raise, promotions, etc)?

I know with WFH there is really nowhere else to go, but work has been driving me crazy and I haven’t taken any time off since February. Would it be unreasonable of me to ask for a week off in the next few weeks to celebrate my SO’s birthday and to just decompress? For background, I’m part of a very small in-house team which makes it harder for me to not feel guilty for taking time off. I also have been dreading asking my boss this question and feel like if I don’t ask now, it’ll never happen...

Is it normal to feel numb around the holidays? I'm tired, dealing with seasonal affective disorder and a really tough caseload right now. Not in the holiday spirit at all and honestly don't even want to be, I just want to spend the weekend resting. Is it bad that I don't care about it at all this year?

I’m casually thinking about looking for a new job. I LOVE where I work. I’m not micromanaged. My boss never questions when I’m not in office(we have remote capabilities). We have a very good working relationship. Never denied vacation time. Full health benefits paid by the company. I get to travel to conferences in Vegas and Atlanta. I currently make 75k in Arkansas. Im fiercely loyal.
Would love some input from attorneys and paralegals in the pros/cons of staying or going.

My school has seen combinations of f2f, hybrid, and remote teaching/learning throughout the first half of the school year. After the MLK holiday, our district is returning to traditional f2f teaching 100%. I have 4 band classes (1 beginning, 2 intermediate, & 1 advanced), and as far as content pacing is concerned, we’re 1 9-week grading period behind. Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?

Want to give my two weeks notice because my new job starts two weeks from next Monday but my manager is on PTO today (Friday) and Monday. Didn’t know they would be out for this long since last week — they didn’t communicate. Is it appropriate for me to text them if they’d be free to schedule a meeting today or Monday? Or should I wait till they’re back on Tues? (that makes it less than a 2 week notice tho)

Hello Everybody.
I really need leave for two weeks. My project does not have long leave policy but it has strict target policy. The last best leave I took was for 4 days only. I really need a long leave so I can have a vacation atleast once. it's been 3 years I worked in my current project. Never taken a long leave. Plz suggest me good ideas. I'm not sick but getting depressed day by day.

I ran into my ex a couple days ago and it’s just all screwed with my head. We are kinda talking and he invited me to his company holiday party to be his +1.

And then he’s been ignoring me.

No Tipping All-Inclusive Resorts
Does anyone have any suggestions about places where you can stay without the hassle/expectation to be tipping everyone all the time?

I hate having to give tips for everything when I'm on vacation. I don't want to be carrying cash around. In fact, I don't even want to be thinking about it. I just want to relax!

To be clear, this isn't about the money. It's about the hassle. I'd just rather pay an upfront gratuity fee that covers all of tips for the entire stay.

I am a terrible wife! It’s my husbands birthday today (39th) and I did not even find time to get him a gift. We came out of state for an extended weekend with my young toddler as a kind of birthday treat, but I realize that I am just not making enough efforts. I just got him a slice of carrot cake and made a super simple breakfast. I had to put this down somewhere! I almost feel like all I am doing is running behind this little energy bunny all day all night. Sorry, vent over.

I am a first-year in big law who started earlier this year. I am on pace to bill around 140 this month and I feel like I am not doing enough work. What could I be doing differently to be more visible?

Accepted an offer of employment with a mid-sized firm to begin in a couple of months. I’ve always wanted to shoot for big law but haven’t had the opportunity thus far. Overall, I accepted because I didn’t want to take the opportunity for granted in addition to the uncertainty with hiring due to covid. Would it be an issue to shoot for a big law opportunity in the interim? I know how this looks and sounds, so I definitely don’t want to set a precedent that I deal in bad faith.

Thoughts on giving your two + weeks notice after you’ve been told you’re receiving a bonus (and it would actually be paid while you’re still at your current firm just after you’ve told them you’re leaving)? Or does everyone just wait until their bonus actually hits their bank account? Being able to give my two weeks early/mid December would be a lot better for me but don’t want to jeopardize not getting my bonus (which comes usually 3rd week of December).
