Project Management

Anyone ever dealt with an agency wanting to have PM report to Account? I know the role of both, and it would be better for these two functions to remain separate - how do I argue against it?

Completely agree. As for the argument, I think you have said the crux of it: they’re separate functions and skill sets, so it doesn’t make sense to have one report into the other. It’s bad from a development standpoint, but I also think it’s really unhelpful day to day: your team needs to be pushing back on account sometimes, and the power dynamic of you reporting into account would really mess with that and ultimately end up being bad for the business. Can you suggest an alternative person/department that your team should be reporting into? Or would you be advocating to keep your current reporting system? (Either way I think it’s fine; just want to make sure you have a proposed solution/alternative as you make your argument.) Good luck; you’re definitely right on this one!

There has to be a healthy tension. AMs are intimately responsible to the client. pMs are ultimately responsible to the agency & protecting the creative team (to an extent). At my small agency we report to the controller since we need to protect revenue/AGI. At my old agency I reported to the Dir of Operations who was also a principle. And prior at a big ol agency PM reported up thru a SVP of Ops.

This happened at my agency this week. PMs now report to the VP of Client Services over their verticals. All of my concerns about this happened day 1. The VP of CS that I now report to is asking me to help her Account supervisor with the difference between a Project Brief and Creative Brief and help her with connecting to Strategy to get a plan in place for a new client. I’m now going to be the person to train her team because she’s not interested in it. Meanwhile I will not receive any training or mentor ship for what I do as a Sr PM. This is also my 5th supervisor in a year. The PM team has been bounced around so much that we don’t know which way is up anymore.

If anyone wants to join a boutique HR & Talent Advisory consulting firm, Kincentric is hiring for an Associate Partner role! Location doesn’t really matter, but preferably in IL, NY, or ATL.
