"Joe, I may have been too hasty. Would you let me think about it for another week? I apologize for responding too fast, but the more I think about it, the more I think I'd like to come work for you. What do you say? Is the offer still open?"

I did this and still got the job.

It's been awhile but I think it was only a day or 2 before I wrote an email to HR.

like

I think it doesn’t hurt to ask. The success will likely depend a lot on how you declined it and whether or not they’ve moved on with the next candidate.

like

Gotcha, I was Going to send an email tomorrow to HR

Doesn’t hurt to ask but understand that you may burn a bridge if they re-offer and you decline it again.

like

This.

How’d it end up?

like

They offered to someone else unfortunately. Sucks but just couldn’t pull the trigger and accept it. All is good, will sit tight until something comes up worth leaving for.

So you declined yesterday? Through phone or email?

Do you get any sense that they will counter offer anyway? I guess regardless I would email the person you declined the offer with right away and say you reconsidered.

First time manager and one of my teammates stalls work by giving extreme scenarios. If I ask them to write an API endpoint, they would say that they need to setup k8s deployment first etc etc. I agree that it might be required but it’s not step 1. Any tips are appreciated.

If you could reinvent the way companies recruit, what would you do differently?

I know I would make it a standard across the board that every hiring process could not have more than 2 steps.

I believe that with that limit, people would get more creative and come up with better assessments (but maybe I’m being naive?) 😅

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Anyone have bad experiences with in-house recruiters willing to share? I've been interviewing for an in-house gig, and the company's recruiter has been leading me on and blowing their own deadlines. "We'll have a decision by Tuesday!" No update, then I'll follow up, then I'll get another deadline that is ignored. Repeat x3. Is this just (1) par for the course, (2) a bad recruiter, or (3) a red flag for the company in general?

Here are some thoughts on metrics: compensation, culture, retention, promotion frequency, outside counsel use
