I gave my boss a three week notice.. a new employee to take my spot and I offered to help him out on Sundays.. YET he didn’t even pay me out for the vacation time that I earned.. giving any time is bullshit. They just f you over anyways
Thanks for sharing your experience. I guess luckily we don’t have to worry about that at EY they’ll just f you over in other ways lol
Do you have another job lined up?
Because there is no benefit to giving more notice than needed
🤦♂️
P1 - bad take in my opinion. Biting my tongue on this, but the partners and SMs and even most managers are so far removed from the way things are now. Huge disconnect. It’s why the profession is essentially designating in front of our eyes.

I’ve been around long enough to have observed law and accounting firm behavior post tech crash in 2001 and post financial crisis in 2008….and more recently the early covid19 in Spring/early summer 2020. You think they gave a single day of notice to anyone when they fired them - let alone 2 weeks?!!!!! I was lucky enough not to experience this but watched several friends get fired en mass during economic downturns. I would not give two shits about giving anything more than the standard 2weeks.
But why in the world would you quit without something lined up? Trust me when I say this….I’ve seen boom and bust cycles play out several times. The economy and labor market can change very, very rapidly. Like summer/fall if 2006…law firms and big4 couldn’t hire tax associates fast enough. Fast forward 18 months….they couldn’t fire the people fast enough. Just because demand is extremely high not does not mean it will remain that way.
Don’t quit a job unless you have your next gig lined up. How do you think that looks to the next employer? “Okay, so I see on your resume you quit EY in 2022? Why? Oh - you didn’t like it? But this job is tax too…will you like it here ?”
Agreed regarding how effed up it is that EY let many people go with no notice during covid. The hypocrisy is definitely not lost on me
I am switching SSLs, that’s why I’m leaving EY. I’m sick of being strung along for the last year regarding my internal transfer
I really have no issue with giving notice without someone lined up. Things like that are exactly why I have a healthy emergency fund that can hold me over for a very long time. I honestly could use the break to do some traveling I’ve always wanted to do
I’m already decided I’m leaving at the end of this tax filing deadline and kinda just want to give my notice now rather than waiting till 2 weeks out.
I think if I give extra notice my teams will be grateful I’m not leaving them in the middle of busy season and also know what’s going on and why I’m not performing at my normal level
I enjoyed this post and subsequent commentary immensely. The premise of "at-will" employment has always been, and will continue, to be weighed towards the benefit of the employer. Employment in this area is a contract that is a similar to a month to month lease but on a daily basis. The idea of 2 weeks' notice was not to benefit the employee, it was to find a replacement worker with as little downtime or cost possible to the employer. It is one sided as so eloquently put, in the 2001, 2004 and 2008/2009 crises that saw a rout of employees in phases with no notice and limited, if any, severance. That severance came with a document to sign to go quietly into the night with a raft of other requirements not for the benefit of the unenployed. So, transition is important to help your team but there are times (and reasons) to burn bridges if you wish, but the construct and myth of the 'right thing to do by your employer' is hard to deal with in light of what past patterns have taught us.
Thanks for the input. I thought about this all night. I don’t think employer will give enough week notice when they fire people. Then why they even criticize people give two week notice the thumbs rule at least right now. I am so sad if partners are not even realize the mutual treatment. And glad to leave and regret not even earlier when I tried to extend my offer.
I’m actually in the same boat. Have a new job line up already…. Not sure what should do or bring up this. I don’t want to burn bridges
AA1 I'm intrigued. Transition time, historical norms or something else?
