Anyone ever had to back out hours weeks after a project was finished because it went over budget? (Contd.)

Ey2 is out of their mind. Report the shit out of being asked to eat hours. D2 is right, if you miss utilization target, you've got no recourse. It's not your problem if people above you don't know how to price a project. If you're slow, that's different. But you didn't describe the fact patten that way, so I'm giving my advice with that in mind.

like

Ey2. Your attitude is what perpetuates this bullshit and exactly the wrong thing to teach people. We have very strict rules at D around eating hours and even more rules around protecting people for retaliation. OP. I recommend you discussing this with the SMGR. Explain that you understand that the project is over budget but that you have concerns about your utilization. If he forces the issue then go to your counselor. Finally, you can go to integrity hotline.

like

Op - that is wrong. You shouldn't be backing out legit hours.

like

OP you made your bed when you were dishonest and buried hours. Don't repeat that mistake.

like

If you are asked to reduce hours below 40 a week (8/day) when you've notedly worked far more than 40 on average per week, then you need to 1) let your counselor/coach know - seek their advice, 2) pushback and explicitly mention that you already haven't charged overtime so backing out hours would effectively hurt that minimum threshold of being full time on a project, 3) if it gets to a point where it is out of your control, send an email to the SM and others staying "per your request, I have backed out X hours with a total of billed hours on the project now equal to Y, making my average hours/week Z. That way at a minimum you have documented evidence and frankly can be used at year end if your utilization is low

like

My mgr is upfront about it. Everyone bills the same.

like

I make sure my team bills actuals. You work, you bill. If that kills the burn rate, that's an Upstairs problem, not working peep's problem.

like

Cool D3. Run your holy attitude by a partner with a margin issue. Youll get flattened. I agree its bullshit. However, advising junior employee to run to HR is idiotic and potential career suicide. Thats the reality. Not the fucking HR manual some of you seem to think matters.

like

@EY2 Being a chicken shit and having morals only when it safe won't get you far either.

like

Yea had a sen mgr here when I started out that had me use vacation time instead of billable hours, what a dick, I didn't know better

Its wrong but theres no way to report it that wont fuck your reviews and career so grin and bear it

Op, be very careful. If you miss utilization will the leadership have your back at the end of the year? This happened to me, and I dropped a rating at year end

Director1 clearly ignorant of the reality on the ground for junior staff. Up to higher ups to manage margin if budget blown. If they dont, which is what usually happens, shit roles downhill. Sending then to HR is a great way to tank relationships. Be a rat at your own risk.

EY3 +1

Thanks Director 1. I think you've got the right line of thinking. I don't intend to run it up the flagpole but I'm going to stand firm on my hours and make it clear that I'm not comfortable backing out hours. Also, just to clarify, I didn't ghost that many hours in actuality on this project. Maybe 5-10 and mostly that was just stuff like checking in on weekends or doing prep work (e.g. meetings with client over phone, ordering equipment) for the project before the engagement began. I usually bill what I work and work what I bill - I just wanted to clarify that it's not like I was overcharging by any means.

I just need to vent. I am so sick of dealing with one of my coworkers. He has been a thorn in my side since I started working at my new job. He thinks he is the boss, despite the CEO telling him he's not the boss. He wastes 90% of his time micro-managing me instead of doing his own job. He intentionally alters my work after it was finalized, without telling anyone. He lies to everybody and nobody here likes him. The CEO won't get rid of him, nobody knows why. I love my job, but can't stand him.
