Anyone ever heard about employees working multiple jobs remotely due to manageable workloads?

I’ve never heard of a manageable workload…where does one find that to start with?

likefunny

Yes, but if you can pull it off in law you deserve the double salary.

Yes read a lengthy article not long ago about this becoming more common. Just don’t remember where I read it prob on a linked in feature. Not attorneys I’m sure

I’ve done this and it’s manageable. As others said make sure your contract allows for it or get clearance from HR and run regular conflict checks. Depends on your firm honestly but you can pick up doc review and other projects easily outside of work hours.

I read an article about it but don’t know anyone who did it in real life. It sounds like a miserable existence honestly, with the work they described that’s involved with keeping everything straight, not getting caught, and keeping your performance okay enough not to get fired. But I guess if you really need the money it’s one way to live your life.

I’ve heard of people in tech doing this. I don’t know how you could swing it as an attorney.

My partner does this but he’s in tech. He makes $300k working solid 9-5. We live together and I’ve never seen him work after 5 or on a weekend. Understand that’s not the case for everyone though.

At first glance my initial response was “you live with your Partner?!” Then I realized you meant your significant other.

Many employee handbooks strictly prohibit this. Might work for a 1099 employee but difficult for a W-2. If I found out one of my salaried employees had a second full time job, I would be thinking back to every time they said they were too busy to take something on and every time that something took longer than it should have to complete. If the list was longer than 1-2 times, I would seriously have to consider moving on from that employee.

The employee handbook at my firm actually specifically authorizes us to work in other jobs so long as, something along the lines of, it does not interfere with your workload at our firm. I was kind of surprised when I realized that but I think it’s kind of cool to authorize it.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

I’m interviewing 2Ls for a summer associate position at my firm, and today I received a cover letter that was FOUR pages long and went on and on about the kid’s medical history from high school and beyond, dropping in the fact that he lost his mother at a young age, and saying that this was why his grades were low. Mind you, his transcript wasn’t required to be sent so I wouldn’t have known he had bad grades. He didn’t even say anything about the position! It read like a college entrance essay 😵‍💫

Mid level atty in a fast moving case. Earlier this year jrs brought on the team to help lessen work flow. Both partner and I delegate certain tasks, esp when we’re super busy. Junior goofed regarding deadlines (which I had to ask for twice); now partner is stressed, tho we should be able to lock in an extension. Jr took ownership of the slip up. I owned that I should have checked his work, but I feel that I hurt my rep. w partner. What to do? Lay low? Not a fan of throwing ppl under bus.
